Default Will i need a valid passport to go to Berlin?

Flying from East Midlands, two day trip?

Mine is out of date.

If so how long does it take to get one?

According to the treaty of Rome, I believe all you have to be able to do is prove your identity to travel within Europe as a citizen thereof.
As such, a photo drivers licence should do the job.
However - be prepared to waste a lot of your time pushing this position.
Also the airline or whatever may have there own rules as well.

Theres an express service (https://www.gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently) which will sort you out if you're in a hurry, though you pay a bit more for it and will have to go collect it from you local passport office. I wasn't in a rush so did mine through the Postoffice's check-and-send service and got it back within 2 weeks.

cster may well be right about just needing to prove identity and citizenship... but I'm not sure I'd want to risk that route!

You will need a passport. Once your out of the UK and on the main part of EU i.e. Spain, Germany etc then a suitable ID card will do to move between borders. But unfortunately your'll need an in date/valid one to leave or enter the UK.

Cool

http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens...n/index_en.htm

So wise to take it. Some airlines insist you have a passport to fly, even internally, so best check with them.

The standard by-post service is quoted as 3 weeks, used to be 6 weeks. Post Office do a check and send service for a few quid extra which may shave a couple of days off.

You can get one the same day but need to visit a regional office with appointment and hang around. I think there is also an express one week service but you pay quite a bit extra for these.

Website is pretty good and helpful. You cannot download main application form btw so need to get hard copy one from Post Office.

I wouldn't chance a trip without a Passport.

What crossing?

Careful of those border guards at the Berlin Wall

Theoretically you should be ably to travel within Europe with a photo driving licence or an out of date passport as long as the photo still looks like you.
Trouble is with airports and the jobsworths that work in them. Personally i wouldn't attempt it without an in-date passport.

If you are British - you do not need a passport to get back in to Britain.
However, obviously this will not be the quickest way to clear immigration.

Personally I would take a valid in date one! IF you get a new one you'll get the chip installed which entitles you to a cavity search on return.
