Default anyone have to wear a work uniform but have to wash it yourself? tax rebate!

if anyone here has work clothing provided by their employer which they are required to wear but the employer does not provide laundering facilities, then you are entitled to a tax rebate which can be backdated. copy, paste and edit the text below and send it off to the HMRC address at the top. im not one to play around with the taxman but since they sent me a letter declaring i owe them £400 (despite being on the PAYE scheme) i thought they can have this right back! good luck!

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing with the regards to information I have received concerning a tax rebate which I may be entitled to claim.
I started working for [company name] in [date] and I am currently still working for the same employer to date.
The company provides me with items of clothing which are embroidered with the company’s logo. There are no facilities provided by the company to launder them on the premises, therefore I have been laundering them at home myself.
If I am entitled to any rebate I would prefer to receive the amount by cheque to the above address.

Yours sincerely,

Did this a few weeks back.

Had my tax code changed for this year so I am 60 quid better off.

Waiting for my cheque for 120 quid for the previous 2 years.

Well worth the cost of a stamp

Being self employed, I've claimed the cost of laundry for my work clothes for many years.

Surprising how many people don't know you can do it, and even more surprising that some accountants don't seem to know it.

As far Asimov aware you won't get a refund. They will just adjust your tax code accordingly. Still well worth doing though.

What are the rules on qualification? I wear logo'd overalls, coats and polo shirts when on site but a shirt and tie (un logo'd) when in the office.
