Default Mali - here we go again!

Just watching a report on Mali. The French and British governments are making all the usual noises.

Islamic extremists... check
Al Qaeda sponsored ... check
International threat... check

Of course we are not going in militarily in any way

Expect mission creep folks.... like how protecting the civilians in Libya became ousting and assassinating Gadaffi

FFS we can't afford it and just need to learn to stop poking our noses in to other people's business!

What more Durka Durka's kicking off?

You are 100% correct we can't afford it, it's got sweet **** all to do with us and personally I coulden't give a flying ****, none of my business and until it directly involves me I don't care.

Must be a threat if the French are getting involved with troops on the ground. Whenever has that happened?
They have been very reluctant to get involved in anything since Vietnam.

"Just a few weeks" say bullish French President in a move that should boost his sagging poll ratings as a man of action

Deja vu, as they say in France.

So he will bomb the s,hit out of the extremists for a few weeks and hope they will all be dead or give up?

Not quite sure it works like that.......

Exactly! The French only look after themselves and it's about time Britain did the same.

There are a lot of British interests in country and in the surrounding too.
I think its better to lend a hand when its worth it to us. Flying a few "supplies", wink wink, around is probably a good thing.

I think we should let the Islamists have a safe haven country where they can construct plots against the west.

I mean, they had Afghanistan and couldn't manifest any serious attacks then...............apart from 9/11.

What's more worrying is our stance on the so called Arab springs. I was quite uneasy at the time in our involvement in these situations. I read today that the Islamists were using arms from Lybia.

And the UK has never sold arms to any other country has it?

And both the US and Britain have been funding, training and attempting to funnel Gulf arms through Turkey and Jordan to their favoured factions for some time.

Aye, but we've now supported so many regime changes, what will we do when they all go Fundamental Islamist and start hating us?

THAT will wipe the smile off Cameron's and Obama's faces quick enough.

Unconfirmed reports that 34 hostages have been slaughtered after a strike on the terrorists at the Algerian gas plant. Jesus. The terrorists are demanding France's withdrawal from Mali, in case that's not in the Daily Star today.

Excuse my ignorance, but have our beloved government actually explained what they meant yestrday by the term 'caught up in' when they said several British citizens were caught up in the hostage taking in Algeria. Does that mean some of the hostages are British?

Not good news Not that it really matters what their nationality is, but I just can't understand why the government statements last night were so cryptic.

This is starting to sound like a right royal botch up of an operation in Algeria..... still no hard facts, but Cameron says to prepare for the "bad news" which means all or most of the UK hostages are dead!

Those hostages were as good as dead as soon as them extremists rolled up. By all accounts those western ones that weren't killed outright were going to be shipped out for God knows what, a spot of beheading in some propaganda video somewhere after being tortured for several weeks? Who knows exactly what happened, but they reckon a good deal of hostages have escaped. I can't think the Algerians had much of an option, what else would they do? I'd imagine they've not go a few squads of elite hostage rescue troops handy, and ours would have got there too late.

Sounds like a complete tragedy, but it can't be argued the Algerians ***** footed around and are soft targets for the next terrorist band that turns up.

Can't see how our further involvement can be avoided now.
