Anyone watch The Secret Universe: The Hidden Life of The Cell?

I was mesmerised by this program, even if you're not scientific you will enjoy this for sure:

As a person interested in science, quite knowledgeable about Biology and Evolution and reasonably up-to-speed with modern discoveries, I found the visualisation and production of this programme a complete mindf*ck.

Highly recommended.

 

Awesome, I love science, I am a Software Engineer by trade but anything/everything to do with science and technology interests me.

This is the kind of stuff kids should be seeing in schools, would get them totally hooked on science!

It wasn't a science programme, it was arty-farty over produced meeja crap

No explanation as to how the "motor wellies" manage to drag a virus along some intra-cell highway.

How come without the "wellies" a virus cannot move, and yet its DNA can swim like an eel.

It appears that all "nasty viruses" are black - oooh, scarey evilness.

All interviews with so-called "scientists" were with wobbly hand-held cameras, zooming and tilting and irritating cuts and different shots.

Animation is an excellent way to explain things, but the dumbed-down BBC seems to think that it is the only thing that is required (why bother with proper facts)

I would love to hear comments from a real "cell scientist" as to how accurate that disneyland cartoon was?

Sometimes you need a bit of disney land fun to perk interests. Those that are genuinely interested will (usually) look into the subject with more detail.

I'm not sure about all the protein nano-machines, but I'm pretty sure the ribosomes are considered to work in the way they were portrayed; i.e. they travel along the transcribed RNA strand, assembling amino acids in the prescribed sequence and churning out a protein strand, rather like an old-fashioned label-maker. They are true machines, with moving parts. I expect the rest of the machines aren't too far off from the programme in the way that they work, but it's a visualisation - it doesn't look like that, but the science has to be presented in a way that can be understood and visualised.

 

I thought it was amazing. They probably have to take a bit of artistic license to make it visually appealing, but so long as the science is sound I don't think it matters. What I don't understand is that the Almighty Lord created the world in seven days around six thousand years ago and there is no mention in the bible of two each of the viruses upon Noah's Ark? Hmmmmm, maybe the BBC have messed up here after all!

i watched it too, the scale of it amazed me. i know a weeny bit about this kind of stuff. the stuff that goes on on this scale is mindblowing.

as in there are turbines which use atp to produce protons (electricity) the human body cant use electrons so it has developed away of using protons instead.( it was actually shown on the mitocondria, but not explained)

i think it was more accurate boomer than you may at first think, obviously the viruses were black so you could distinguish them from the human cell.
