Default Possible to claim for loss of earnings due to hostage situ?

Bit of an odd one here.

http://www.westerntelegraph.co.uk/ne...t_town_centre/

Town has been pretty much closed since yesterday lunchtime due to some idiot making a scene and appearing to hold his girlfriend hostage.

We've lost a days income as the town centre has been closed all day. Is it all possible to claim for loss of earnings?

I'm not sure who you want to claim from either?

I didn't know if a claim was possible and if it was where to start and from whom. Hence the post. There was some talk of claiming earlier whilst watching the siege earlier today.

reminds me of the story of the old women who walked into a newsagent and insisted she had won the national lottery

after a fraught 5 mins of conversation - the shopkeeper asked the old bint for her ticket

"oh no i don't actually play the lottery"

anythings worth a try I suppose

Most decent employers would pay you your basic salary anyway ?

Cant imagine they would dock your wages as it was not your fault

If they do take it as a holiday and take a couple of sickies as revenge on them
When Carlisle was flooded I got paid for 9 weeks as it wasn't my fault we were 6ft under water

Only thing you could expect to loose is commission etc for a days sales but you will find trade will be up the next day anyway as things get back to normal

Is there a clause in your business insurance policy?

Ah thats a point. I would expect it to come under "force majeure" though.

To be honest I don't think its likely. Our problem is that if we have a bad Saturday trading then the whole week is ruined. Pretty much goes for everyone in the high street and ours is one of the many that is currently dying on its ar*e.

Problem is, who picks up the cost? Someone will have to pay down the line somewhere, whether it be with higher premiums or taxes.

In life, ****e happens. All you can do is put some dosh away for a rainy day. If you don't, there is no one to blame but yourself.

If he can afford to do that..

Sounds like a ****ty situation, depending on the loss, your insurance would be the way to go I expect ..

Worth a look. Our warehouse insurance policy has us covered if there is a war or the warehouse is destroyed by a UFO attack. Seriously.

I would take on that risk for every business premises in the country for a ridiculously low premium. Say £200k per annum HMG let me know.
