A postbox that was painted gold in Jessica Ennis's home city of Sheffield, to celebrate her Olympic triumph, has been vandalised.

The graffiti was scrawled on the postbox in Barkers Pool in the city centre.

A new layer of gold has been applied by a Royal Mail employee, a Sheffield City Council spokeswoman said.

Ennis received the honour for winning the gold medal in heptathlon at the London Games.

One person who saw the graffiti said: "It's disgusting. It's a shame. I have a lot of respect for Jessica Ennis and what she's done for Sheffield."

A Royal Mail spokesman said it was "extremely disappointed" about the vandalism.

Vandalised by a Zero, by a Scumbag who couldn't walk in the shadow of those who work hard for what they believe in ....... I'm calling for all ScumBags to be removed from society - permanently!!

Then Labour would never get back in power as they are the political party of the benefit scrounger.

We wouldn't be humanely removing the Scum for the vandalism .... we would be removing them because we don't want to share the same planet as them - end of!

No, I don't think it is. In isolation perhaps, however it is part of a larger Post Office initiative involving the issue of commemorative stamps honouring the achievements of the successful Team GB athletes.

Perhaps the celebration of success is somewhat alien to you?

do you need to celebrate the success of someone you don't know and have nothing to do with to prove your own merit?

What harm is it doing by painting a post box in gold to celebrate the gold medal winners? I think it's a good idea and is a bit of fun too. I would imagine when people walk past the gold post box, it would probably put a smile on their face.

It's not as if it's costing an arm and a leg to do it either. Would you rather everyone in this world not give a toss about sport or the olympics, and for everyone to just sit at home with a stale face?

I think as a nation, as a society, we need to take a cold hard look at ourselves and ask why some people feel the need to this sort of thing

then line the fvckers up against a wall and shoot them

It can go down on public record that if the Tories spent as much energy in getting the ScumBags off the streets as they do buffering their mates in the Banks - then, YES, I will vote Tory!!

But, it ain't about to happen - they are soft on crime and soft on the causes of crime!!

Wasn't the "vandalism" just a sprayed-on "Go Jess" or something.

I'm not sure how heinous a crime that is?

People do go OTT sometimes with passion. I am all for Olympics, and Sheffield could have celebrated Jessica Ennis's gold medal win in some other way. IMO a disinterested antique didn't need to become a martyr for it. Re-vandalising with grafitti is worse, I know. But the authorised vandalism had already taken place by imposing the odd, gold paint on the traditional post box. Both deeds are wrong IMO. I don't think the post box was happy with looking all golden.

Unimaginative celebration of a quality triumph, I say. You can't go around wiping the glorious history or British traditional markings off to celebrate the glorious British present; unless the past needs to be wiped off/painted on.
