Hi guys,
On other forums we run there is often a "members life stories" topic and its usually a multipage epic where people unleash details of their life and become a little more "Human" to the community as a result... its usually pretty popular if you have enough members with the ***** and inclination to write something interesting.

Has Scoobynet ever had one? Done a search but cant seem to find one.

We've had one or two members unleash (I like the choice of words) details of their personal life on here but the generic response tends to be accusations of attention ***** or the creation of much entertainment at the poster's expense. Sympathy and empathy have been notable in their absence.

Not sure Scoobynet is the ideal forum for that, although its certainly changed days from the days of the professional trolls (not to be knocked, by the way, that in itself created some truly classic and long running threads and certainly livened the place up for many).

I think it could work. Some members tend to do it anyway and I enjoy reading them. I've been on some forums where it's the worst idea in the world but this community is pretty much grown up enough to handle it I think.

 

Could be worth looking into mate but some people might not be happy to disclose any thing so it makes it a bit of an argument thread especially when other members slate each other off

 

I started writing mine years ago under the advice of a shrink, and hand on heart, it made a huge difference to the way I percieve certain things... dragging back long forgotten memories is an interesting process, often painfull, often enlightening and for me, has allowed me to compartmentalise a lot of things that have happened in my past. Also, looking forward, it has left me better able to deal with new problems that pale into insignificance compared to past events that were once long forgotten... reminding yourself what you have overcome already, is a good way to keep current issues in perspective.

I always enjoy them, to discover the background of a member who you have always enjoyed reading posts from always strkes a nice chord with me and gives me a little insight into why they say what they say and perhaps who their viewpoints have evolved to be a little different from others. We also have forums where this would be a non starter due to the demographic being too immature to handle it, but I feel Scoobynet has a much better demographic than that most of the time and the decent members far outweigh the ones who dare take the proverbial during a sensitive subject.

Hmmm... so who is going first? LOL

 

It certainly has, and sadly it had to. But I like to think that slowly and surely we can bring this place back to life again. I like debate of controvercial topics, but it has to be dealt with carefully before it becomes a free for all.

 

Why did your post make me think immediately think of the guy that got his ar$e whipped litterally.

Your writing reminded me of an incident a couple of years back...

Was sent to boarding school at 8 in England and ended up at a decent public school when I was 13. Throughout my time, both at prep and public school I was bullied, as were many of my fellow school mates, and nothing was done about it as it was a case of MTFU. However, it obviously has its impact on a young person and helps mould them for their later years.

This has come back to me recently in two quite suprising ways.

The first was before the last election when one of my year at school was standing as a prospective MP. I was contacted (for the first time in nearly 30 years) by another fellow aghast that this bloke was potentially going to represent the electorate at parliament. He had gotten in touch with a number of former school mates and we all started talking. I had personally probably been the most victimised of this prospective MP but I had had no idea of how much of a bully this person had been to others and other things that had happened during my school time. The fact was that this chap had continued his bullying into his post-school life and had obviously never changed his ways.

For all that time, I had chosen not to think or remember about this chap and my time at school. I rarely mentioned it, would ignore questions and generally chose to forget about it. Speaking with the others and reliving/sharing those experiences was very cathartic but it was when I was contacted by a reporter that the whole enormity of what an effect the bullying by that person had had on me came through. Really quite scary.

(No names, nothing published and he did not (thankfully) get to be an MP - British public have sense)

The second one was illuminating as it illustrated very clearly the history above. I went to a prep school re-union (35 years), mainly out of interest and to see what had become of people. There was one friend there I had been looking forward to seeing and we chatted througout the evening, reminiscing. I asked him what public school he had gone to and he said "the same one as you!". He was, in fact, in my house but because I had blotted out my public school time from my memory, I had completely forgotten that I lived in a close proximity to this friend for 5 years.

Since the two events above, I have personally become stronger as I realise how devicive and vindictive bullies can be on others. Whereas before I might be cowed by such behaviour, I now meet it head on, confront it and if I see it happening to others, I step in and stop it.

Quite surreal though to find all this out at this stage of my life.

 

Nice idea if you can put up with the flack, as we do have a bunch of people who love to shoot down others, which does make many of people keep personal things more personal.

I think some of the harsh backlash is when someone creates multiple threads about their personal life - no matter how boring or uneventful it may seem to others...people get annoyed with it.
However if it sticks to one thread generally, its not so bad. Snazy's cancer thread (https://www.scoobynet.com/non-scooby...t=snazy+cancer ) being a good example if taken as a thread on its own (and not all the other of Snazy's threads - no offence intended if you read this, Snaz).

I do have a personal blog of the sad events of 2010/2011...not sad as in anything tragic, just sad as its bloody boring. I wouldn't dare publish it on here. I just did it as personal ways to straighten a few things out in my own head.

If you can write you life story of 40 years in a FB post with a character limit of 100, I dont think anyone even WANTS to read it mate.

Indeed you do, but some people dont need to hide behind a keyboard and therefore dont particularly value the anonymity the format brings. For me personally, I am who I am and I use community forums as a way of interacting with other interesting people... those who demand anonymity by default are not very interesting at all to me as most are people trying to be something they are not and using the anonymity to protect their lies.

 

Great example... its a very interesting therapy when you get into it. I recently "discovered" I sopent a lot of time in borstal and childrens homes... imagine that, 40 years old and from 20 to 40 had blotted it from my memory... scary stuff the human minds capabilities!

 

A great example of people who dont value the annonymity a forum offers.



Every single one of those people are from Passionford on a night out I used to arrange twice a year in Blackpool.

There used to be meet ups organised in general and muppets many many years back. Regrettably I never managed to make it to any (caught at work and uni and being too far away). In hindsight I wish I made the effort when I had the chance TBH.

Well, it was only a thought, if nobodys interested then so be it, just wondered if we had one as I would be interested to read it.

We have one over on PF mate so maybe there yes.

The only thing stopping those times returning are the members mate. Socialising offline too leads to stronger forum communities and many a friendship, even marriages in many cases.
