Energy monitors that clip on - do they work around a cable that is only a live?

Home business will be running from a building that has its own consumer unit, and it has separate live and neutral tails coming from the meter area, but the meter also includes other parts of the building.
Because the home business will be using about twice as much energy as the rest of the building, we want to keep accurate records or usage to justify them to the revenue.
Are they accurate?

I understand they need to be connected either around a live cable or neutral, but not both
