Why do SatNavs do this?

Specifically on motorways. What's different about not turning off a motorway as opposed to any other form of road? Why can't they say nothing till you're approaching the turn-off you need?


And while i'm at it, who else has a Garmin Nuvi. What the hell is the point of giving roads names instead of numbers? When are A or B road names ever useful? I don't CARE if i'm on the Stanford By-pass, i want to know i'm on the A13, it can't be difficult, but no

It's a good heads up if there is a lot of traffic on the motorway. Unless you just barge across and cut people up.

As for the road names!! ARGH, I'm totally with you on that.

Maybe because the road splits in to two motorways and the one you need is the one your already on.

When I used to drive a stretch limo the sat nav in there told me turn around while I was driving on the M11 Of course I didn't

It might only happen where a motorway joins another motorway, that's a point. But even so, what's difficult about keeping on the same road, motorway or not. What makes that situation worthy of a SatNav comment. Seems inconsistent to me.

Cos if you're in the left lane, that might turn off the motorway, so a junction is approaching, make sure you don't stay in the left lane and accidentally turn off.

Some of the inside lanes on the M25 become the turn off at the junction, so for the length of the road it's 4 lanes, then past the actual junction it's on 3. If you blindly stuck to the same lane you could turn off the M25

It is normally when the left hand lane or lanes exit as opposed to there being an exit you turn into. It does make sense, but is probably unnecessary.

Having said that, my Garmin was insane sometimes: It would tell me to come off at a particular junction to the roundabout beneath and then tell me to go back on to the motorway! It seemed to think that this was quicker than continuing on the motorway itself.

Well while writing that I did think it was probably only a feature the middle lane hoggers would actually need (as they are the only ones that stick blindly to a lane without thinking). And if they're in the middle lane it wouldn't affect them anyway!

Because the maps are tagged by software. There are a limited number of differing flags available. Where roads separate: 'keep right' is the appropriate flag/message of those available.

This also explains why some corners are regarded as turns by the application, as the maps were flagged incorrectly when they were tagged.

Better software is checked by real people driving the roads and correcting flawed tags, with more checking the betterer the software...

when driving at 120mph that 1.5miles is over very quickly. .. the ony think i hate about my Garmin is that it says I live in the street behind. I contacted Garmin - I used to work at retail so was able to and they said the update will sort it...

Nope I still live in the street behind No wonder no one can find my street lol.

i think, on the Garmin Navi, if you go to the Home screen, press Settings then select the BMW option, and enable Motorway Mode

you should be fine
