It because they need to undercut the best Android handsets, if you cant compete on technology you need to compete on price.

The prices you see are tied in to a contract.

The phone is $649 + tax and they don't have any in stock. I went to ask at the Apple Store yesterday in San Francisco and they will be getting some mid-November.

With the current rate of exchange it isn't that much more expensive than here (£499 inc).

If you buy a properly unlocked phone it is fine. The ones from Apple will work without any issues.

If you buy a second-hand one you have to look very carefully at how it is unlocked and whether it has had the baseband fiddled with which means as soon as you update the OS you either will get a bricked phone or certainly one that will not be unlocked anymore.

Arn't most US phones CDMA and not GSM?? Think the 4s is both, but also fairly sure the older 4 is not. So be careful what phone you buy from the states if you intend to bring it other here to use.

A locked iPhone (4 and 4S) doesn't have a SIM slot. The unlocked versions are GSM only and do have a SIM slot.
