Get yourself a Great British Railway Journeys DVD. Portillo stays in some amazing places.

Blackpool, thats 'Different'

On a serious note though:

York is a nice place for a couple. Lots of history and nice hotels / eating shops. Keep away if the weather is bad though as most of the hotels get flooded.

My favourite hotel is this portable one I have where you sleep under the stars after a few beers / glasses of wine sat by a blazing fire. Problem is camping is not everyone's cup of tea

As above the wife and I had a very nice weekend in York, plenty of nice pubs and bars even if the weather is sh*t. Depends what your after, city break or a countryside retreat? Lake District is always nice (though off season is better), Scotland too far a field?

Stratford on Avon is good for a weekend - lots of stuff to see during the day and a nice town to walk around, then RSC in the evening. Some classy hotels nearby.

What is your budget?

Rockcliffe Hall near Darlington is stunning - but even on a deal is £200 B&B per night.

I like Malmaison/Hotel du Vin myself.

Or try Leeds - great night life, shopping and restaurants

York is good but lacks decent hotels until you hit the very high end price bracket.

As above, what is your budget and what will you want to be doing, chilled or busy weekend?

I stayed in some nice hotels, The Radisson Edwardian, Leicester Square and the Trafalgar Hilton. As Trout says, expensive, but if your looking to do something a little special/different/memorable...

All depends what your after from the weekend.

If budget isnt really an issue have a look at the Johansens website. They tend to specialise in luxury non chain hotels.

Alternatively if you fancy a hotel in London there are loads of nice ones, but they come at a price.

Three Ways House Hotel I like the idea of that the mrs has a very sweet tooth.

Budget is max £200 a night not all about the money just places like the above which has something to do or some nice places to visit local.

Thanks for all the ideas keep them coming.

Surely taking her up the Oxo tower would be more appropriate

When my boyfriend told me he wanted to take me up the Oxo Tower for my birthday, I was a bit hesitant at first because I didn't really think it was my scene. How wrong I was! I mean, yeah, so it's a bit of a strain on the old back pocket, and I admit I did feel a bit uncomfortable initially. But a couple of cocktails helped me relax and soon I was really getting into it - we carried on well into the night. It was a great experience and I really loved it - so much so that I won't let my boyfriend take me anywhere else now! So if anyone ever wants to take you up the Oxo Tower, just throw caution to the wind and go for it!

Ty Morgan's was a nice place simply as the locals were barking and welcomed all the guests as long lost relatives.
