Question If your Tom Tom dies, Question

My missus rang me to say her Tom Tom had died.

I just wondered does that mean we lose all the maps/voices we downloaded on to it as I believe they downloaded onto the Tom Tom directly not leaving a file on the lappy, so if it is dead and I buy another I have to start again and pay out again?

I wondered if anyone has had experience of this and what happened

Cheers

I think that many of the tomtom devices have the maps etc on the SD card ?

But look on the bright side, your missus may not be able to navigate home and so you could have a few nights home alone

Our Tom Tom seemed to brick itself.

I pressed and held the power button and kept it pressed for over a munite, it flashed, then I tried again, and it came back to life.

Its not been quite right since but at least it works now (takes ages to find GPS, goes flat when in standby etc.)

Thats all fine and well, but I'd like the kids back at some point

And i'd rather not try and guide her over the phone using Google maps as I had to earlier, **** me that was difficult, no sense of direction

I'll have a look at it when I get home, I just dont recall it coming with an SD card.

Cheers

When you buy it, you are apparently supposed to back up all the maps onto your computer.

They don't ell you that, and when you don't, if it dies, new maps are £50

Once my Tom Tom kind of died. It would start all right, but it wouldn't boot to the degree when it would start to analyse roots. I asked someone to do something about it. They did this:

Paperclip solution:

1.Remove the TomTom from its cradle.
2.Turn the unit upside down.
3.Look for a small hole in the bottom of the unit. It will be located just behind the release button. The reset button is recessed inside this hole.
4. Straighten out one end of the paperclip.
5.Press the recessed button by inserting the straightened end of the paperclip into the reset hole.
6.Hold the button down for ten seconds, then pull the paperclip out of the hole. Your TomTom should now be reset back to the factory settings.

That made my Tom Tom work again.

This technique was taken from ehow.com, and it worked.

The moral of the story is: Don't give up just yet. Just a paper clip can do magic.

LOL yes she's home

She said it wouldn't work after she turned it on,screen had white lines running across it

So I plugged it into the pc and it seems to be fine on the boot up, no SD card so I guess Data is stored on the Sat Nav. First job was to copy all files to the pc !! doing an update as we speak the pc and Sat Nav appear to be communicating OK.

We'll soon see after the footy

You don't have this problem with a proper map.

like I said OS she's a bint, no sense of direction

Funnily enough its working fine for me

So do I
A:Tell her I've fixed it and collect a reward
or
B: Tell her there was nothing wrong with it and have to sit through a 10 minute rant about how it fooked up her morning again

Tough call

You don't believe me, do you?

Honestly, I had my Tom Tom 3 fixed with this method. If anyone's Tom Tom is beggered, try this. I mean, your Tom Tom is f**ked, anyway. What have you got to lose??? If it doesn't fix via paper clip, you can throw your Tom Tom away, which you would have done, anyway. If it does fix your TomTom, you can thank me afterwards.

Seriously, paper clip method worked a treat on my Tom Tom. Saved me money on buying a new one.

Note: "You" means OP's wife or anyone with broken Tom Tom, including mrmadcap.

Yes paper clip or If it does not have a hole press the on off button and hold it for about 10 seconds you might have to do it a couple of times
And charge it up for a couple of hours

No help now but I just bought a cheap SD card and copied the TomTom one. Use the cheapy one in the TT and keep the original as backup.
