Radiohead's new record, The King Of Limbs, is presented as the world's first* Newspaper Album, comprising:

Two clear 10" vinyl records in a purpose-built record sleeve.

A compact disc.

Many large sheets of artwork, 625 tiny pieces of artwork and a full-colour piece of oxo-degradeable plastic to hold it all together.

The Newspaper Album comes with a digital download that is compatible with all good digital media players.

The Newspaper Album will be shipped on Monday 9th May 2011 you can, however, enjoy the download on Saturday 19th February 2011.

One lucky owner of the digital version of The King Of Limbs, purchased from the website, will receive a signed 2 track 12" vinyl

I loved their first three albums, but the latter stuff just sounds like a man whining and in some amount of pain to me.

The later albums aren't accessible "rock" albums, I'll give you that - but there are some sublime tracks on them. You need to play them a lot to "get it".

Hyped by whom? Justin Beiber is hyped, Radiohead have critical acclaim, which is a very different thing.

Do Coldplay have critical acclaim?

A lot of turgid, middle class people with nice sound systems love them, but they're not advancing the "art" of music in the same way as Radiohead are. Stuff that is uncomfortable listening now becomes the vital influence for popular bands yet to come, as the history of music has shown again and again.

And if it's your opinion, it's only fair that you say "in my opinion"

Leaving the first three albums aside what is my best option to try and get into the katter stuff as to be fair I always tell people to listen to a Peter Gabriel album 10 times to 'get it' so maybe I should practice what I preach with Radiohead?

Agreed, Coldpay haven't progressed muscially form their first album that much really. It's all a bit ... lightweight!

I liked their first album at the time but looking back I think they were always dreary easy-listening rock maybe? The new Dire Straits? Plus Chris whatshisname is an annoying pratt with his stupid affectation of wearing ribbons and stuff around his wrists!

I like Radiohead though, but they are sold as so alternative and 'edgy' that they become mainstream.

In Rainbows is a really good album and well worth listening to.

f1, there're some tracks even off "The Bends" and "OK Computer" that I'll skip if I'm not in the mood. On the other hand, I find "Kid A" difficult and I don't mind admitting it. Uncomfortable music repays repeated listenings, though, I guarantee it - once you "get" it, they have so much more staying power. Tracks like "Pyramid Song" with its mysterious, intriguing timing and chord changes are really satisfying once your brain nails them. Then the melodies which are underpinned by that structure are a whole other level to enjoy.

I think listening ten times is about an order of magnitude too few to "get" the best stuff off the later albums.

It's not the "King and His New Clothes", either.

Cheers, yes got a copy of Kid A and despite trying I just couldn't get into it. Will try something a bit more recent and maybe revisit Kid A further down the line.

I do know what you mean abotu more difficult music being more rewarding. Using Peter Gabriel as an example again So sounded amazing when it came out in 1986 yet sat here now in 2011 I find I listen to the harder less instantly accessible PG IV way more often than So.

F1_fan, seriously you must listen to In Rainbows, it is their best album imho, better than OK Comp and The Bends (no doubt I will get slated for that comment) and I loved both of them.

In Rainbows is such a beautiful album that touches your soul, it's the only way I can describe it and I have never said that about any album, listen alone and listen to it 2 or 3 times a week over a 2 month period and you will be converted, especially tracks like Reckoner, Weird Fishes/Arpeggi, House of Cards, Step 15 and if you like your Bends era Radiohead look no further than Bodysnatchers and Jigsaw falling into place.

p.s. Bubba is spot on about Kid A and even Amnesiac, although Hail to the thief was much easier to get into imo

And another Youtube favourite is "Scotch Mist" this is a live in the studio rendition of In Rainbows they did for New Years a few years back, awesome stuff

I am into all kinds of music & try to appreciate most bands as I have zero musical talent myself & admire anyone who can write, sing & play a tune either for pure entertainment value or to get an important message/feeling across.
I have tried to get 'into' Radiohead as I heard many great things about them but I don't get it. They seem to whinge a lot & have some dark topics or am I missing something?

Should I persevere ?

Not sure if any of you are into The Naked and the Famous, they're album is now on pre-order for the 14th of March. Heard a few of their released songs and its a bit different to my usual tastes, however really like what I hear so far.
