This car came out in 1988 and I don't think I've ever coveted anything so much as a Tamiya Avante. It wasn't competitive, it was too complicated but it looked stunning.

Before the re-release, unbuilt boxed circa 1988 on ebay would clear £1000 easy. Even tired ones can fetch a few hundred quid.

It is £450 though

Modern racers can cost more (my old rallycross buggy was £400 without engine or radio gear) but £450 for a shelf queen is a bit much.

Ed, takes me back a while - I built a Tamiya Hornet and Bigwig when I was younger. So much fun! the Hornet was so much funoffroad and the Bigwig had shuch speed that it kept shattering its bumper on every slightest touch of the landscape!

Best approach I found on both cars was draining the oil shocks and leaving them as air shocks. Spongy as hell but so much fun to drive

I have a 2WD wild one I seem to remember, an upgrade from my Grasshopper!

My brother got all posh and went Schumacher, and then petrol. I always lusted after an RC10!

Actually in early stages of starting a club if we can get enough interest - although I haven't raced for 2 years.

I bought a Hotshot when they re-released that a few years ago... so much fun! I still have my old 1/12 scale Celica GrB ;o)

If they ever reissue the Wild One, I'll be getting one as that was my first rc car too.

I started with a Hornet and then onto a Kyosho Lazer ZX then a Bosscat finally onto sommat i can't remember. Used to race twice a week and had loads of cash in it

I've still got an original Tamiya Rough Rider in my parents loft, it should still run, but It would be nice to get the re-release.

A work mate of mine has the Tamiya Vanessa lunchbox reissue and just got a Traxxis Riva (I think)

Ive got a Tamiya Bigwig which hasn't been out of my parents attic since the mid-90's.
Due to my mates pestering I've dug it out and it seems to be more 3wd than 4wd amongst a few other issues so I'm gonna get it fixed up again, and finish the painting!

Any advice for decent controller's as the old one's AWOL

sold mine last year, leaving me with an original boxed (unmade) Grasshopper, and I;ve made an original Hornet.
Also got a Yokomo MR4 rallye.

Got a Nitro car too, but might dig em all out for the dry weather.

I had the Tamiya Grasshopper II first, a 'Super G' model with updated shocks, wheels & a 540 (rather than STD 380) motor. I had sooo much fun with that, I wanted a 4wd model, and ended up with a Tamiya Terra Scorcher for Xmas the year after. I still have both now in good condition, but the grasshopper has no rc gear in it! Great memories!

I've got a picture of me about 11 years old building the Avante 2001. It was a cheaper Egress but not quite the same. I'll be broke if the re-release the Egress too. Shame I can't afford two Avante kits because I'm not sure if I want to take it out the box - read on a US forum a couple of them have bought 2 - one to build and one as an investment.

Just the Tamiya TL01 sitting in my pit box, and the chasis of my Yokomo MR4TC. Still got all the batteries, radio gear (inc three crystal sets), tyres, oils, lubes, paint, ESC, couple of shells, chargers, and quite a few dog bones - they always used to go on about lap 8.

Raced at WLRC in Hillingdon.

I won yorkshire championship with a hotshot 2 nd behind me was the old schumacher cat then the dobs bollocks back then an rc10. I ran a demon ht motor sps drive shafts and associated shocks

I sold it eventually then in the last year i got a traxxas revo and got a mega engine was fun but sold that now

Up north seem far better for RC than south (its all but non existent in west wales ) as in tracks etc.

Its tough finding indoor arenas for winter. Outdoor shouldn't be too hard as I have plenty of farmer contacts who might help out. Looked into timing gear and didn't realise how expensive it can get - AMB system is like £5K near enough! Carpet probably isn't cheap either.

When we go up to see the wifes folks in Pontefract I like to pop over to Otley to Modelsport.

Im just getting into RC cars. Just brought a Losi 8ight 2.0 which is brill!!

I go over to a track in Ware, Hertfordshire which has astrotrurf track and dirt track and does racing on weekend.

I did love doing it, i remember with my hotshot i stripped it tottally down and regreased the nylon gears etc,

what i also rem is spending a lot of time at Morley Models and Otley for drivehsafts etc.

when i got my Petrol car it was fast but faffy ad more expensive, you couldnt just strip it down.

Guys outa intrest what is the dogs in Electric off roader nowadays.
When i raced the RC10 was the daddy the schumacher CAT arrived 2 years later, and the hpornet was the pref 380 model

if one was to revisit electric what is the holy grail now ? is associated still good or tamaiya better now ?

4WD electric off-road was my favorite class until I got into 1/8 rallycross. The noise is just awesome - I don't get making 1/8 cars brushless, they are quick but no noise.

We couldn't hear the timing system over 10 rallycross buggies so had to have a flagman to send us off.

I ran touring cars indoors in the winter but they drove me a bit nuts - they punish inconsistency and I am Mr Inconsistency with my driving.

Personally I'm not sure.

When I was racing leccy off-road wasn't very popular and it was all touring cars. Now it seems leccy off road is the most popular right now. The amount of 4WD offroaders is quite a surprise.

IMO, find a club and see what they are racing. Spending big £££ on the car will not translate into being good on track - for instance I ran an Academy SB Sport for a season and it was very cheap at about £130. Ran in the super stock class and could beat a mate running a Losi XXX4 with a mod motor - the Losi was almost 3X the price of my SB (too fast for the driver with the mod motor)

It sounds like my Hotshot but heavliy modded. It says based on the Hotshot.

My upgrades when i had it were

Fully Ballraced
2 pairs of associated Shocks running medium Oil
Full Fibreglass chassis to lose the heavy plastic one.
STP Drive shafts based on Drill Blanks
Demon High touqe motor but i also won another motor cant rem name but it was fast as

Yeah i know what you mean.

My m8 had been racing for over 5 years and i started with my hotshot at ABC in Leeds.

I won 90% of the races i did indoor and out i also came first in what they called the tactical driving where i flew around a sports hall up on benches reversing Jumping distances etc. In Fact ive still got all the rosettes and trophies at me dads.

I dont know where i got this coordination from but i just had the spark.

Pity i never followed it all up, My last trohpy was for the E Class Yorkshire chapionships of which i won

I didnt get the A Class because they were all the Modified engines and sponsored boys .

I think Batley Buggy club still runs but wife would kill me if i got 1
