From a New York Times article last Thursday about US regional car buying habits:

Other associations between car and place, however, seem to have sprung up almost preternaturally. Why does Subaru do so well in Portland, upstate New York and Boulder?
Part of the appeal, of course, is practicality. Subarus are relively inexpensive and have all-wheel-drive systems that perform weill in rugged terrain. But that does not really explain why they are also so popular among lesbian drivers. (Subaru has even capitalized on that demand, producing television advertisements with Martina Navratilova).
