Default Deep Fat Fryer, anyone still use one ?

We, when drunk got nostalgic for proper chips, Royle family style so ordered one on Amazon, just fired it up for the first time, not had one in years but good god, compared to oven chips they are a revelation, just on the right side of overdone, takes me back to being a kid when my mum still had an actual chip pan that had the magical solid block of lard in it that turned to liquid, there she was, *** in mouth shaking the basket.

Anyone still own one ? these days its a bit like standing up as a Pikey to be counted

We still have one we use it for proper chips when we have steak, I don't mind oven chips most of the time but not with steak

It's not until you have proper chips that you realise just how poor oven chips really are, I don't think people enjoy oven chips they just tolerate them until the deep fat fryer comes out to play

I fire out the chip pan, when the kids want proper homemade chips.
I cant stand the oven and frozen chips, they just dont taste right.

I think there are different disciplines of chips, I think us Mancunians are probably like Eskimos with their different words for snow.

There are chippy Chips, obviously but even within that there are different disciplines, Kebab shop, Chinese, English etc.

Home Made Chips

Burger Van Chips

McDonalds Chips

Micro Chips

Oven Chips

Canteen Chips

School Dinner Chips, difficult to find unless you want to end up on the Sex Offenders Register or are a kid.

The list goes on, depends on your mood, there is a Pecking Order with home made at the top, then chippy chips. Even then its down to the age of the oil, type of spud, cooking time.

Still have one, and it's full of solid animal fat until it heats up although it's not topped up with the dripping from the roasts like when I was a kid. Can't beat proper chips although I am on the lookout for a crinkle cutter

Crinkle chips was the preserve of my nan's on a Sunday lunchtime, with the butchers best beef rissoles, making me hungry thinking about it

There is a certain irony in "Chip" commenting on deep fat fryers?

Hello David and merry xmas to you and your clan.

I know I am an expert on all things "foodie" but strangely the name Chip has no connection to anything connected with food.

We have a Russell Hobbs one used frequently. Makes bloody good chips too on about 80% power for a few mins. I'm certainly not a pikey, but I'm not one of these folk who don't have one on the merit that they are supposedly to good or successful to have one. Bit like everything in our kitchen, there to serve a purpose and not impress our shallow friends

Yep, we still have one but real chips are a rare treat - usually only once every couple of months. Incidentally, our deep fat fryer was a wedding present, 26 years ago! Still works brilliantly, although the basket might not last much longer. It'll be a shame to see it go.

Ah, another frying thread.

This is how these normally go:

A number of people are disgusted by the concept of a deep fat fryer.

A few people post up that they have and use a fryer.

Someone suggests that those 'few' people are Scottish.

They usually turn out to be exactly that.

More posters act disgusted at the concept of frying.

Someone mentions an actifry (or whatever it is) where you fry the food in a thimbleful of oil and suddenly everyone is happy.

Thread ends.

Though I did think about it...

I've got one. It gets used weekly, and the oil needs changed frequently, or it will froth over the top unless you stand holding the basket up.

Also, when the youngest comes home from uni and bangs those curly barbecue chips in it, which are supposed to be done in the oven, it taints the oil.........

But hell yes, there is NO substitute foir REAL chips.
