Default Petrol Pump Thingies.

Why don't they make them small enough for girly hands? It really makes my hand ache when I'm filling up, and sometimes I have to hold it with both!

can you not just put the pump hand lock on and leave it to fill?

I rarely see a lock at a UK pump. Loads on the continent though and much better than our design. Especially when it's freezing cold and you're using the stinky diesel pump.

Also, the latched petrol pumps are a fire risk. If you hold the pump, you are always earthing yourself so the car, the pump and you are at the same electrical potential (voltage). If you let go, charge your self up by walking around, sliding on and off the car seat and then come back and grab the handle, you could discharge your static charge and ignite the vapour escaping from the tank.

What about diesel then?

It's the most popular fuel these days.

Diesel has a flash point of 50-60 degC so on a typical day, will not give off sufficient vapour to be explosive. Petrol has a flash point of -40degC so on any given day will be giving off sufficient vapour to form an explosive or flammable cloud.

I've seen pumps overseas where you clip an earth wire to your car.

I prefer the ones in South Africa where someone fills up your car, checks your oil, cleans your windscreen and then takes your money - all while you sit in your nice air conditioned car

So, if there's no danger why don't they have locks on the diesel pumps then? They're only missing a half inch long catch pin in the handle.

Dunno! Probably to act as a dead man's handle in case the nozzle falls out of the filler neck.

It's not a highly flammable material but it makes a horrible mess!

I think they have them on the HGV ones.

Just wedge the fuel cap in the lever; job sorted It'll still stop filling even with the cap there.

Oh, and I have to pay the attendant at Tesco, becuase the pay at pump machine refuses to read my clubcard, had the exact same issue at Shell with their points card too

The pre-paid pumps annoy me at Shell.

Also the surly asian chap who works at the counter.

Anyone come across the tw@ts selling FW1 waterless cleaner at Shell service stations recently?

Had one come bouncing along offering to clean a bit of the car as a demo.

Told him not to go near the car.

He started spouting on about how FW1 was "a new product and it didn't need any water blah blah blah."

Told him not to go near the car.

I then pointed out waterless cleaners have been around for decades and you could buy that cr@p on ebay.

He didn't go near my car

Maybe pointing the petrol pump nozzle at him at the time had some effect !
