Fancy giving this lark a try.

I'd like to go round the Cornish coastline then once confident go over to France, it would be top to get over to Greece one day and do a bit round there.

Seen a couple I like the look of but how easy / difficult is it to get into, boating etiquette an all that malarky.

really you need to get some qualifications/courses, mandatory if renting yachts in greece/turkey

althought the best way to start day-cruising in the Med is to join a "Flotilla" type holiday - where you sail (on your own) with a group of other yachts under some loose supervision

the base qualification is Competent Crew and is run by the RYA -- which leads upto Coastal Skipper and finally the Yachtmaster qualification

the main focus is safety and navigation

I have a Shetland 570 which is a small cabin cruiser for some time. Its for sale now. I used it for fishing off the coast down here and it is a good boat, it has a well renowned hull design and is also very strongly built. Mine has a 70 hp 4 stroke Suzuki motor which is economical compared with a 2 stroke and also quiet, you can hold a conversation when it is flat out. Bit too small for long distance stuff I think of course. It has been a good boat for what I wanted to do anyway.

Forget about the etiquette what you need is a bit of experience first unless you afre going to go stright for the 'hololigans choice'

you dont say power or sail . pottering around the coast ( even tho cornwall is probably the most treacherous lol ) is a bit different from sailing all the way to greece

Got a Cranchi 21 with 5l V8, love the boat nearly as good fun as the jet ski but a bit more sophisticated! Always helpful to know the rules of the sea! Powerboat or sailing course should educate you enough

 

As dpb says, you don't mention power or sail and there is a big difference. We've got a 24ft Hinterhoeller shark, a great little sailboat. My wife has sailed and raced them for many, many years and has been teaching me the ropes (pun slightly intended) for the past few years.

The adage "A boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money" is very true. There is always something that you'll want / need to do to the boat, plus it's not just getting the boat that costs. You need somewhere to store it during the winter, launch and haul out fees, club fees, fuel, etc...

Is it worth it? Well, for the most part, yes it is. It is very relaxing to jump on the boat and pop out for a quick sail, or a longer cruise over to the Toronto Islands and moor up for the rest of the day.

 

my boat gave me two of the best days of my life - the day I bought it and the day I sold it ;-)

I can only describe the experience as being similar to standing in a cold shower at the same time as burning £20.00 pound notes.

I've got a Mirror Dinghy & 2 fibreglass open fishing boats (12/14ft) - both cost naff all to run and maintain

watched Timothy Spall plodding round the coast in his barge and fancy a bit of that

not bothered how fast it is, as long as I can sleep and eat in it that'll do
with a toilet

 

You'll be wanting sail then. My small sports cruiser makes the Scoob look frugal on fuel, circa £2 a mile when making a reasonable speed.
