what are you having? Most tattooist will do you a design, if you show them what you like shop around though as some are better then others in terms of price and helpfulness/willingness, there is some good custom artists over here in west yorkshire, bit of a trek for you though. And ask which style they specialise in, most good artists have a favourite style ie japenese, tribal, potrait, black grey etc etc

Really, MUM down your arm, I can see the sentiment but surely there are more subtle ways to honour her than it tattoed on your arm ? I know mine would go ape if I did that.

there is pretty much any letter style available for tattooing, personally i would get a tattooist to perhaps draw you a few different syles up and c which looks the best,
I have large old english letters down my forearm, in black with some grey shading, looks different from most as i had them resized and shaded as opposed to solid black

Is there anything that reminds you of your Mum that you can turn into a tattoo something sentimental a place or an item that you could get a piece dedicated to her something significant. Tattooing the word mum is a nice sentiment but get a piece of work done that you can look at and smile at.

Obviously its your call but it's kind of what I would expect to see on a sixty year old.
I am sure people on here can come up with some ideas, perhaps her name done in a nice font, or mum in another language (what is yours or your mums heritage ?), perhaps her initials ?

Maybe a rude question, so I apologise in advance, but is your Mam alive or not? I only ask as you mentioned a cross. Maybe that is your style, but just wondered if this was a memorial to her.
Either way, if you like the style of cross and can find one which suits, maybe get that with either 'mum' or her name incorporated into it.
I personally think each to their own, and do what you feel you like and could live with. Just getting mum down my arm wouldn't be my thing, but tattoos are personal, so it's about what you would like.
A good idea as mentioned is to speak to a tattooist/ a few and see what they can offer anything around your taste. Or if you know any arty peeps, get them to play around with your ideas and when happy, see if you can have it recreated as a tattoo.

If the text "Mum" is what you want, I would personally suggest a scripted text rather than the imagery above. Something classy looking rather than the tombstone-esque texting style above.
Try watching a bit of Miami/L.A. Ink, lots of inspriation to be had
Just make sure it's a nice custom piece and not something the local pond life and pop in, point to the wal and go "want that one"
Andy (6 tattoos self designed thus far).

Yep, sounds about right, done wrong it will make you look like something out of a Biffa Bacon cartoon in Viz, done right it could be really nice and still be a fitting tribute.

Some interesting ones here, names that read the same back to front and upside down and some that read a completely different word when read the opposite way. One example in the gallery is "Family" that reads "Forever" upside down, clever stuff.

If your mum collected/collects fans then maybe pick one (if you can get one) and have that as your back piece?
Failing that, has she any other hobbies? Or favorite things such as needle craft or sudoku? lol
Maybe you could custom design the whole fan with imagery that is personal only to her, and then have 'MUM' on the handle of the fan, or even more discreetly on the clasp?
Kathryn - two self designed tattoos, with my next one in the making.

Personally I would not go for "mum" on me either, but each to their own. I have a tattoo in honour of my mother on my, but it in no way says what it is. Its just symbolic, which for me is the best way.
Do you have any tattoo's at the moment. I see you said abouy a massive cross on your back with lots of shading, but know what you are getting into first.
As has been said, tattoo shops are very hit and miss. General rule of thumb is if you can walk in off the street and get it done there and then, you were either lucky or they are somewhere between crap and average. (not all, just a general guide lol)
Get to know the person and their work before letting them put a needle near you..
Good luck on what you decide, I hope we get to see it in progress or finished.

I think it's a fitting way to pay thanks for all the hard work she has done to raise.....putting that aside, I reckon it would look great too.

Have you asked yr mother whether she wants you to get a tattoo ?
if I thought of writing mum on myself, my mother would tell me not to be so stupid or to waste good money on something so ludicrous.

Lots of replies, thank you.
For the record my mum passed away 2 years ago tomorrow. Since then I have been thinking of getting a tattoo done in memory of her.
Some have suggested getting a symbol of one off her interests or something to that effect, I dont really fancy having a glass of wine or a piggin tattood.
I am open to suggestions so if you would like to contribute please feel free.
Jacko, accept my apologies for snapping emotions were running high.

Saw a guy on holiday who had "Mum" and her birth and death dates, was sad as the death was this year but it did make him look like a walking gravestone, not a good look, I would be worried about it putting a partner off during a "romantic" moment, as long as you know what it represents, nobody else needs to, its personal so I would keep it subtle.

As The dogs has said, is there anything she really liked? Well other than a glass of wine.
Or if you struggle that way on, is there something you really like which you could then combine with a tribute to your Mam?
I appreciate you are trying to get ideas, but it is very difficult for strangers to give them as they obviously don't know you and your taste. You need to thnik long and hard as you have to live with your choice.
