Default The Summer 2010 Plane Spotters thread

Come on plane nerds...

Not sure if this will work, but jot down here any interesting sightings you get during the coming months with planes attending airshows and stuff.

I've just today spotted a Spitfire and Mustang together flying NNE over East Northants.

We had that red Baron WW1 Fokker Triplane over our village last week too.

We have an Eurofighter hooning around at Brize this morning. Not the same as a Spitfire/Mustang but not bad!

Nothing intersting here, under the flightpath at Manchester, it's all 320's and 767's which are only really worthy of attention if flying in a strange way, making a wierd noise or billowing smoke.

I want to see a 747 SP again some day.

Many years ago I was at the little industrial estate near the runway and there were two A10s and a stealth flying around the place. Utterly amazing to see them at Brize.

Good Spot!

I few years ago I worked in Romania and had an internal flight from Bucharest to a place called Timisoara. It must have been an old Air Force base as lined up alongside the runway were a number of MiG-27's in various states of decay.

Was that around July time? Would have been for the RIAT (Ait Tattoo).

There was an Apache flying round here as well, backwards all the way up the runway!

Well I haven't got a clue what they are but I've just been to the driving range near Mildenhall and Lakenheath and seen two USAF jets (with 2 sets of funky wings) and a big thing like a hercules flying around. The fighters normally do a few "touch and go" flights and the big one normally just seems to cruise around and around nonchalantly.
There's been quite a lot of flying activity in the last week.

I always wished I could get my hands on one of those-miraculous handling abilities for its time.

My mistake, was thinking of the Sukhoi 27. But the Flogger was a bit of a worry with its limited look down shoot down capability.

Les,

Are you not confusing the MiG-27 with the Su-27?

the MiG was a ground attack version of the MiG-23 and, so I believe, was a bit agricultural!

Posted before your edit

It would have been the MiG-23 that had the advanced (for it's time) radar.

The '27 had a laser range finder and a flat nose.

However, my smugness has been tempered somewhat by finding out that Romania only operated the MiG-23MF, not the '27 so it must have been Flogger Bs I saw.

I was in India earlier this year and one night we flew out of Pune Airport, which is still an active Indian Airforce SU-30 Flanker base. We were next in line to take-off and got a bird's eye view from our 737 as 3 or 4 of them fired up their afterburners and shot off up into the night.

Yes ok, the Flogger was the only one at the time with that radar, I thought it was the MIG 27 though. It did have a bit of a twitch factor for us if we had to go and do the business.

We did find though that the Eagle on Red Flag when it was on CAP was unable to see us at low level at night with its look down shoot down radar and we had to chuck out an IRD to get their attention just for something to do. Once they saw the flare we would just jam their radar anyway!

Happy days, we used to win a lot of beer from them!

3 weeks ago I saw 10 (yes 10!) eurofighters, 4 hawks and two unidentifed take off from Coningsby in 10 minutes. thought there may have been an excercise going on -- but someone said it could have been a practice for a fly-past (when's queenys birthday??)

Has anyone been to the Machloop in Snowdonia?

I went the other day, and I can only describe it as uber epic!

If you are also in to photography....then there can be no better place to go. You can get above/level with the planes, and see them coming so you have plenty of time to get pics.

We saw about 5 or 6 hawks in the hour we were there. And were treated to a hercules flyby at our campsite.

I'm in Cumbria and quite a few use the hills behind for a playground, presumably coming in and out of spadeadem .......... Hawks and Tornado's usually but Harriers as well.

Hercules also practice dropping into Crosby and Apache's as well

Lots of Tuccano's at the moment for some reason...

Do we get a cuppa if we pop in?

So far this year, whilst at my parents house I have seen Wokkas, Merlins, Lynx, Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster, Mustang, Vampire and The Blades fly over. The helos seem to fly over on a daily basis which is nice

From my new home I've seen Tornados, Typhoons, Hawks, Tucanos, Dominies, Hercs and an SAR Sea King all from the comfort of my living room window which is about <------this far------> from the runway at RAF Lossiemouth I've not actually moved in yet but that little lot was just whilst I was staying up there for a week sorting the new place out. It's planenobbertastic!

My best plane nobber moment so far this year was whilst boating on Loch Oich on the Caledonian Canal in Scotland and getting buzzed by a very low and fast Tonka
