Wife and I had a debate over wine and whether it makes you put on weight. I believe it does and drinking a bottle a night is much more fattening than you'd think.
Here it would seem the Fail is in agreement
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-campaign.html
Wife says it can't make you put on weight because it doesn't have much sugar.
It seems the Fail also agrees with Mrs EddScott

To me this indicates how utterly pointless the Daily Mail really is. Just useless drivel written to keep insipid middle england awake at night.

Firstly, it's just reporting what a) government *advisors* say or b) what is indicated by a *survey* and doing what ALL newspapers do, regurgitating the press release without any *reporting*. Secondly, ignore what any paper says about food/drink causing weight-loss/stopping cancer/causing cancer/making you attractive to the opposite sex/ruining your chance of a one night stand. It's all b*llux 'cos they haven't a clue!
So just chill and enjoy that extra large glass of vino!

Its like, according to the Mail I'm one of the most dangerous people on this earth. I work in the financial industry, I play computer games, my unmarried partner was a pregnant teenager and I even have a tattoo! To your average Daily Mail reader I'm about as welcome as an irish priest in an orphanage.
(Although I do drive a 4X4 having never been off road and large gangs of young adults with hooded jumpers intimidate me so I'm sure theres a DM reader in there somewhere)

If you drink a bottle of anything other than water a night then youve got to expect your calorie intake to go up compared to if not.
The survey saying teetotallers put on the most weight. If you didnt monitor everyones total calorie intake then its pointless as they could have been visiting pizza huts all you can eat buffet every lunch time for the last year.

Drinking alcohol: if you study organic chemistry to "A" level, one of the first and simplest syntheses you come across is alcohol to fat.
Drink loads and then have no exercise, like at night? OK, says the body, I don't need this intake as energy, I'll do an easy conversion to fat and store it.
Not rocket science.
Oh.............and yes I do, and YES I am!

My understanding is very little Alcohol is converted to fat, if any, its the fact you use the alcohol as energy at the expense of Glycogen and Fat, so if you keep feeding your body with Alcohol you get fat, that and alcohol makes you feel hungry and more inclined to say sod it, Ill have a large Donner and chips at a time not condusive to burning calories.
