Default ID Cards to be scrapped?

How much money did they waste on this?

Too much.

A Government with common sense at last. This was never about stopping Terrorism. Why would a Terrorist have/apply for an ID card?

Was just a way for Big Brother Labour to keep an eye on us all, and know where we were spending our money.

It was one big waste of money from start to finish. Even if they had actually made them, there was no way I was actually going to carry one.

Finally, the big brother state may just be being starting to reverse a little. What is the point of "protecting your freedom", if by doing so you take all of your freedom away in doing so!!

At least £216m wasted on this utterly pointless scheme that the public didn't want. Well done New Labour

And when the Tories were stating `cut waste`, labour were wanting to keep spending on sh!te like this.

Wasn't it going to cost an estimated £1b+ for it all to happen?

Tories have already save us at least £784m.

I feel dirty even thinking this but so far .... I'm actually agreeing with the changes we have heard.

I'm off to vomit and shower. Please hold me.

Glad to see some positives being identified. Im sure it will all be down hill and moaning from here on in, but personally im pleased to see some common sense.

Very glad at thids bit of news.

I think the main reason for instituting the cards was to get all that infomation about all of us on the computer for our then leaders' control freakery style reasons.

Not that they had obsessive control issues eh Les lol.

Sadly they had as much control over the data they harvested as a 90 year old over their bladder! lol

Do driver licenses have pictures on them in the UK now (Never used to)? In Australia we do, and THAT is your ID card. You can't even do some bank transations without one here. There have been ID card requirements in Europe for ages, I don't have an issue with it however, the issue I have with it is the politicians statings that ID cards will prevent terrorism. Of course it won't. Like gun laws preventing armed raids, no they don't.

Klaatu, the answer is yes, but only if you've renewed in the last 10 years or so. Mine is still the old paper type and still valid.

It's not clear and could have gone either way IMO, but the principlas are the same. Picture ID cards do not prevent terroism, juts like gun laws don't prevent armed robberies.

and the rest. I'm sure it was more like £3bn and counting. I cant help thinking that we're hearing all about the policies that people wanted rid of and not a lot yet about the bits that are going to really hurt.

I'm going to pick up a hire van with a mate tomorrow.
I have to take both parts of my driving licence, my passport, and a fecking utility bill with me

I think GC8 was answering "they do" to your question about our driving licences having photos on

Although he could have been a bit less vague

You need something in place though. Today a few concerned parents phoned to say there was a dodgy looking bloke near a school playground staring at the children. We spoke with this male who refused to say who he was.

Nothing we could do. Now he could have been some well recorded derranged paedo looking for his next victim - but we could not carry out any check on him. We eventually persuaded him to move using the 'ways and means' act, but in theory he could have stayed his ground.

I am not surprised that he refused to give his name!

You guys would have his intimate details on your shiny computers with a marker saying "potential kiddie fiddler" before you could say "big brother". This information would then find its way onto the extended CRB systems and he wouldn't be able to get a job for the rest of his natural (assuming his name wasn't slipped to the press, printed in the red-tops and his house got burned down with him tied to a chair with electric cable)

As a voluntary thing I have no issue. The issue starts when everyone HAS to have one, and HAS to carry it with them at all times.

Are you two kidding? Even Nu-Labbia's own estimates (which were bound to be hopelessly wrong, as with all big government IT schemes) were close to £6bn, but the real cost would more likely have been £18bn.

Whatever else you might say about the Tories, they've definitely saved us a major heap of money by scrapping this.

ID cards scheme 'may cost £18bn'

Yes they do. They are a pain in the *** too, fragile as ****!! I went through 5 in 1 year!!! A few little scratches on the chip and the reader wouldn't read them. And even though your journey were recorded on the card you still had to get a print out!!! And they were like long receipts and you had to carry the ******* with you just like taco disks. I got fed up and gave up my new wagon for a old banger when i was working for this company
