Red face UK household savings lowest in 40 years say ONS

"People in the UK are saving less than at any time in the past 40 years, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The household saving ratio in the UK in 2008 was 1.7% of total resources, the lowest recorded since 1970, and well below the 7.6% average for that period.

The ONS Social Trends survey reveals that housing, water and fuel now represent the biggest area of spending.

In 1970 the highest proportion was spent on food and non-alcoholic drinks"

Now, I reckon that's just because people are taking advantage of low interest rates to pay down their debts .... rather than saving at pathetic rates of interest?

I'm in the fortunate position of having no debts and have very low outgoings (getting old means that you don't spend much, you tend to have everything you need/want) ... so my personal savings ratio is a stupidly high %! which is daft when you think about it - but it just happens like that

Consultation fees dear chap ......

Plus private pension, plus state pension, plus heating allowance, plus free TV licence, plus interest on my savings, plus winnings on ERNIE ..... it all gets rather stupid.

I can only spend a fraction of what I earn these days .... which is really silly, I should just hang up my brain and be done with it - but then it would rot and I would find myself buying expensive oil and getting re-maps

You'll get a better return sticking it under your mattress rather than putting it in the bank!

As I'm likely to be cut next April by whoever gets in.

I'm reducing my debt to income ratio to zero, to match my income in 2011....

Thanks Labour.

If you would only get over your biased opinions, you could get a Dawes device and a Cocklink and use a decent oil, and you would not need a remap!

I sussed this one out years ago "But I'm not trying to be a dick" So If I am sounding like one please "gimme a quick slap to wake me up"
The gov wants you to save money in some kind of banking establishment "So they know what you are worth and have 100% access to your funds". I'm talking bank wise not personal accounts e.g "RBS has 14million customers with 10k in a savings account". They then use that as Collateral on the world markets buying oil from countries that allow huge amounts of there population to die of malnutrition or just nip over to the UK and get unemployment benifit!! So they then premote this to the max and they even tell the kids at school they should be doing it, saving money!! "Dinna even get me started on the global warming is cause yer dads got a Impreza Turbo"

"Gov in this country are and have been for the last 20 been a total joke" !!!
If you agree just quote the line above !!!!!

Thats what they tell you Pete!

Don't you think we would have been so much better off if they had not wasted so much of our tax money and overborrowed so seriously in order to throw our cash about before the recession for no useful purpose to the electorate?

We would be so much better off if they had controlled the bankers firmily instead of sucking up to them!

We don't even know if the country is saved anyway!
