Default Maths question

A farmer is ploughing his field.

His plough is 10 metres wide and he is travelling at 5 miles per hour.

How many acres can he plough in an hour?

Could someone help me on this please.

Ok 5mph = 2.2352 metres/second

Plough is 10m wide therefore he can plough 22.352 metres squared/s

That means he can plough 80467.2 metres squared/hour

1 Acre = 4 046.85642 metres squared

Therefore he can plough 80467.2/4046.85642 acres/hour = 19.88 acres/hour

This is assuming no time for turning around etc and that he drives in a straight line etc.

i worked it out the other round

an acre is roughly 64mtrs x 64mtrs. so 6 and a half passes or 6.5 x 64 = 614 linear metres at 10 metres wide

there's about 1610metres in one mile.

5mph = 5x1610mtr = 8050 meters per hour

divide 8050 by 614 = 1/13th of an hour (lets call it 1/12th to simplify)

how many 12ths in an hour = 60mins divided by 12 = 5 minutes.

so it will take 5minutes-ish.

Exclamation

13 is not equal to 20

Ahem, 6.5 x 64 = 416 linear metres at 10 metres wide

divide 8050 by 416 = 1/20th of an hour = 3 minutes.

There is a difference between square metres and metres squared.

Technically yes a square metre is 1mx1m square.

1 metre squared is an area that can be made up in a number of ways such as 1mx1m, 2mx0.5m, 3mx0.333m etc etc.

However they are the same area and therefore for this calculation the difference is irrelevant as an acre is also a unit of area. My calculation is correct and anwsers your question.
