Question Bonfire in London?

I need to clear a small very overgrown back garden in Tooting (Wandsworth Borough).

Am I still allowed to have a bonfire?

TIA, David

VERY much doubt it. Even here in the mucky north, garden fires are banned in towns.......the council and fire brigade ignore them around Nov 5th.

Do you have a recyclable waste bin? I cut twigs etc into lengths of around 4" and it's surprising how much a bin will take.

Failing that, it's black bags to the local tip, which, in your case is probably 100 miles away
Couldn't have a smelly tip in jolly old London, don't y'know?

We are allowed them here (Lovely Lewisham council) but I believe they are meant to be in the evening.

Taken from the Wandsworth website....

Bonfires
Garden bonfires are often a source of considerable discomfort to neighbours, and can lead to elevated levels of air pollution, especially particles. It is not an offence to have a bonfire, but there are more environmentally friendly ways of dealing with garden refuse. Waste Services can collect compostable garden waste on request. The waste is collected in special biodegradable sacks. The charge for this service is £16.50 for a single collection of up to 20 sacks, so there should be no need to burn material in the garden. Please telephone 020 8871 8558 for further details.

lol the last one I had here got a bad reaction from a new neighbour. But I cant stand it when they just wanna shout and gesture and not discuss.
She leaned out the window, flapped her arms, and said "really!!.......... seriously!" and close the window. I did shout up asking what the matter was but she has not said a word since..... which is a shame.

lol I shall keep that as an idea for next time. Knowing how much it annoys her I will collect neighbours garden waste to burn, just to have another bonfire.

I was told once when we had a bonfire which stopped the traffic because of thick smoke when the wind changed, that you are not allowed to light a fire outside within 30 feet of a main road. Other than that the Police were quite good about it.

me and my mate had fun setting his garden on fire on his birthday while we were trying to desroy rubbish. not a good idea to play fireman sam when drinking. especially when the hose comes off the tap in the kitchen and you cant put it back on and you cant stop crying with laughter at the timing of it all.

OK - thanks guys. Law seems a bit more relaxed than I had imagined.

If I drive up than I will probably take a large bag or two and sling stuff in that and drop at tip on way home.

But I'll take a box of matches and firelighters just in case.......

I think SW19 is smokeless. Must admit that I do go all FIRESTARTER from time to time but am fortunate in having a fairly shielded garden and I tend to let things dry for months before applying the petrol (safety first kids, always throw the match ) so fire lasts 20mins max.
Always burn in early evenings
