I used Shawstone (http://www.shawstone.co.uk/home_navi.htm), to supply & fit. Excellent price and good to deal with. I rec'd a 20% off voucher through Howdens, so you should be able to haggle off the list price.

I used a company called William Kent in Lincs, but they'd travel. They were excellent and quite reasonable 01205 362652

Is that a no sh*t Sherlock sort of retort? It might be obvious to some, but youd be surprised how many people dont know: they expect granite to be impervious because 'its so hard'... Because it is porous it will also stain: its a nice idea and it looks briilliant (until its stained), but it practice its not so good...

Marathon Marble - 01375 841264. They are based in Essex, but I'm pretty sure they will travel round to you.

Definitely worth a call.

Yes definitely watch out...... granite is like a sponge........if I'm even boiling a kettle in my kitchen I've a roll of kitchen paper in my hand to mop up with quickly.

Do you even know what an urban myth is? This is a simple fact that you should have learnt at school.

Umm.... yes I do.....normally relates to the daily mail and stuff posted on SN.
So please give the relative porosity of materials commonly used as kitchen work surfaces and help the OP with his difficult decision.
Porosity of granite is not the issue it's the bollox that's talked about it relating to kitchen surfaces and no I haven't sat and wondered how rainwater miraculously makes it's way from mountain tops down into rivers.

When we had this done there was a massive difference in the price of quotes North v South UK. Typically in the South prices were up to double for the same square footage. This was two years ago - I would be surprised if things had changed that much.

Granite does need to be sealed - takes an hour or two every six months.

Never sealed mine in 6 years and still looks like new. I do polish it though weekly.

Whilst it may be theoretically porous granite is fine for worktops.

Travertine is porous and is used for tiling bathrooms !

I've had mine for 10 years & no problems - but I always wipe up after myself - I wouldn't leave red wine or curry lying on it for hours - but I wouldn't fancy doing that on any work surface....

10 years on from installation and original sealing. never been touched other than cleaned with soapy water and wiped dry. Water, wine, sauces red hot cast iron pans, etc, etc, sat on it for hours sometimes ( maybe days if we're being totally slovenly after a party or whatever). Still looks like new.

friend of mine runs a kitchen company in wickford. the last time i wanted some granite, i took templates myself and his supplier in ipswich sorted it out for me direct.

let me know if you want the number. i'm not suggesting you template and then fit it yourself, as they can do this for you, but i can't guarantee they will be cheaper than anywhere else

Cheers Richard - would appreciate the number, if only to get a quote for comparison purposes. I think the quote I have from a local company has quite a bit of margin in it so who knows, It's up for grabs.

Well: I grew up in a house in the seventies, which had granite worktops, hence my lack of enthusiasm.....

Forget granite, you want Silestone. Much better and completely non-porus

none of them are cheap in my experience, but then you usually do (to some degree at least...) get what you pay for. i'll look the number up now and email it to you

Don't go there unless you are a Millionaire! Really expensive to buy granite in such small amounts ie worktop size. If you do go there, better to get the builder to buy it as if you supply it & he breaks it then there is always a punch up wrt who's at fault

Update.

Went into the store today and put a grand down as deposit. They're templating in a week and fitting the week after.

Gotta love the credit crunch - got a £500 reduction on the original quote.

RG - Ali and I are bound to be coming out of Hibernation once the weather warms up - BBQ is deffo on the cards, Might even get Toddy back down from the frozen wastelands of the north
