Default Supermarket carrier bags

The last few times I have been into a supermarket it has been nigh on impossible to get those stupid carrier bags from the girls at the checkouts. Asda will only give you 2 carrier bags at a time even if they see you have a fecking huge trolley full of crap. The girl today said they are getting rid of all bags soon due to government legislation ??? How on earth are you supposed to get your stuff home if you use public transport like the goverment is forcing us into ? Why don't they just use fecking paper bags like the yanks ?? I know its something petty but it pisses me off standing there like a **** in a shop waiting for them to hand a 1p carrier bag across

Government legislation? Wtf are they on about??? I work in Waitrose, and they're not banning or charging for bags, but trying to gently 're-educate' customers into using fewer disposables and bringing their own bags. We now ask the customers if they 'need' bags or have they brought their own. Although if a customer only has one or two items I've always asked if they 'need' one. You'd be amazed at how many people ask for a carrier bag for one sandwich!

Went to Tesco's the other day and forgot a couple of the reusable bags, hence needed some placcy bags at the checkout. Had to practically beg to get a couple of plastic bags, all the time with the checkout person sitting there kissing her teeth (was like trisha from bo-selecta, but in a bad mood, no joke) and being a miserable sod, adding 'lickle' comments here and there.
She went on the big speech about not just being able to hand bags out ***** nilly, we explained that it was quite plain to see that we usually used eco-friendly bags and just needed a couple, it was like pulling teeth! Then we were accused of being rude!! I told her she needed an attitude adjustment and that I should speak to her manager and she said "go on, customer service is just over there", so I called her bluff and she got a bollocking - satisfaction

I'm guessing that, as it's a tiny bit of power being given to the checkout peeps, some are being *****, because they can.

trouble is I use them for bin liners - if I cant have them I would just have to buy bin liners - end result, costs me more and is more hassle

We use the Tesco bags for life and you'd be amazed how much you can pack into one of them bad boys.

My missus gets a trolley full of shopping into 5 of them.

As for bin bags we buy the big packs of Brabantia ones, 120 bags for £22, using 1 bag a week means we'll get 2 years out of them

I take my waitrose 'Quick Check' bags to Sainsbury's.

I get people saying 'Oooh, I've brought my Tesco/Sainsbury bags'. Do I give a ****? No. And I don't want to be told for the millionth time........'Ooh, I brought my bags but I left them in the car........hahaha!' I don't care whether you have bags or not! And I'm sick of taking all the stick from people who think I am personally responsible for them being nagged about using their own bags. I'm not. What I do hate is to see bags stuck in trees and bushes and blowing around the car parks and floating in the river and canal.

Rant over...........and breathe..........

Oh Steve, you have NO idea...........I could go on and on.......... Thank God It's only two days a week!

I always tell people to put two bags together for bottles and cans, because they're so thin. Although you always get the odd one who says 'Oh, no.....it'll be fine......' then as they swing the bags off the checkout, the bottles go straight through onto the floor! (Wimmins usually........in that 'Oh I'm far too busy and important to take advice like that from a mere checkout oik in a badly fitting nylon uniform! )

We use "bags for life", one from Sainsbury's, one from asda, and one from Mozzers.... plus two back bags, usually manage to get all the shopping into four plus one for cider/white wine....

Our local Tescos is falling over itself to still give out carrier bags when I forget to take in my bags for life, or any other of the 12,540 bags that are congregating in the boot of my car due to my poor memory......

We use those "Bag for life" ones from Tescos. In fact they're so much easier to lug around than normal carrier bags and don't cut off the blood supply to your fingers, we actually go back if we've forgotten them.

I get the shopping delivered and the amount of bags they use is ridiculous. Tesco's will sometimes use one bag per item! Have had 15 bags for a £80 shop in the past yet you go to the shop and have to fight at the checkout to get one. Hardly practicing what they preech.

What takes the P*ss is they do all this saving the earth crap by hiding the plastic bags, but its ok to have 30-40 flat screen TVs on in the electronics section 24 hrs a day. They could be switched on individually when a customer is interested in a particular TV.
Saving the planet and reducing climate is the most important thing, aslong as it doesn't hurt profits.

We have a BIG Brabantia bin, but I pay 55p for 40, meaning over 2 years I spend just £1.43, saving £20.57 on the vastly superior Brabantia ones

55p for 40 HERE !!!!

Ive noticed this too in ASDA

We keep forgetting our bags,

I prefer using the ASDA ones, as they do get used as bin liners so saving a cost there

I just steal the trolley

What???

You get a good price for recycled Aluminium!

Although tanking down the A road with a trolley tied to the bumper can be awkward sometimes.....

(get the Tescos big bags - those things are the best item Tescos sell - bloody huge and you can fit stupid quantities of shopping in them)

I always just wear my wax jacket and put everything in my pockets and no one has yet asked if I need help with my packing .

Baguettes are a pain but I was thinking about wearing longer socks

I have my shopping delivered by Ocado, sometimes Sainsburys, and the amount of bags they use is ridiculous. Generally each bag will hold one or two items and if you're lucky, three. I know they take the bags back to recycle them but why use so many in the first place?

Had a woman in Asda telling me months ago that they were withdrawing the free carrier bags within a couple of weeks, it never happened.
Think we should all be complaining to the manager of the stores, perhaps then these people will learn their place. lol

It's all well and good re-using your carrier bags (I try to), but they soon split or tear so you need to replace them sooner or later anyway. Like many others, I resent paying for shopping bags on top of the cost of the goods I buy, so would it not be better for all concerned if the supermarkets simply gave away sturdier bags-for-life to their customers FREE OF CHARGE? They wouldn't have to do it all the time, maybe one week every 3 or 4 months with an ad campaign to promote it.

I am sure that in the long-term this would reduce the demand for plastic carrier bags.

Ahhh, now for this I have a plan.

I use Sainsburys home delivery service and it saves me money.

How, well they never seem to deliver on time to me - and the driver has to give you a £10 voucher if he is 1 second late out of the delivery window. I always go for a delivery slot towards the end of the day or in rush hour

Makes no difference to me if they are 30 mins late, just I get £10 each time.

So, I dont use any fuel in my car to drive to the supermarket and I dont use any of my time either so all in all I reckon I save a good £15 - £20 per week doing it this way, thats a good £700+ per year.

Just buy the strong Asda bags that they have at the checkout. They are only 5p each and last ages. We never use carrier bags anymore. They always bloody split anyway.

I am thinking of getting my own blank bags and getting a very derogatory slogan printed on it.

I welcome suggestions!
