"It was the ultimate expression of road rage. A furious woman driver died after ramming another vehicle and spinning her wheels so fast that her own car burst into flames.

Serena Sutton-Smith, 54, burnt to death after refusing to get out of her Vauxhall Nova as she sat with her foot flat on the accelerator.

She spun the wheels so fast that her tyres disintegrated and the metal rims sent a shower of sparks into the engine, igniting the brake fluid and setting the car on fire.

Appalled onlookers urged her to get out of the car as the flames licked around her but she told them to “F*** off”, an inquest in Gloucester was told"

Thanks for pointing that out. Didn't see the second page when making my reply and have edited my post above accordingly!

To answer your question: people suffering from Bipolar disorder can become incredibly agitated. It took 5 policemen to hold down one woman sufferer that I knew of. More common that they vacillate between just being very "down" to hyper. The hyper stage certainly doesn't always manifest itself in an aggressive manner! There is a good degree of non-compliance with medication in patients as one of the common side effects is significant weight gain, which is self evidently undesirable and often particularly hard to take for ladies.

Oh, and as far as her suitability to drive, broadly speaking, she would have had to have submitted to the DVLA who would have asked her to cease driving pending an investigation of her history and use of medication. Depending on how that went, they might want to ensure that her symptoms were adequately controlled for 3 months and there were no side effects that would preclude driving from her medication, that she was compliant with taking it etc.. They would also ask for a specialist report. Subject to that being favourable, she would have been permitted to resume driving.

I'm even more amazed she managed to get that much wheelspin off a Nova. Mine would only just squeak it tyres!

Shocking!!

But words of advice for us all from Horace of Yorkshire...
A friend of mine used to get severe road rage, it was caused by the artificial sweetener aspartame. He found out by removing all aspartame products from his diet.
Worrying somewhat

As a matter of interest, is the word "bipolar" the latest clever word for schizophrenia?

Is having an 'episode' if somebody is 'bi-polar' (which not knowing the specifics I assume to simply mean that they swing from one extreme mood/mental state to another) akin to an epilectic having a severe episode?

I'm sure that Epilepsy sufferes have to prove that they have not had a seizure for over 2 years to be granted a driving license (Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), so why not these unfortunate people too?

So we're assuming that she didn't declare herself to be bi-polar then?

Personally if I shagged both sexes of hairy big white bear I wouldn't broadcast it either.

Either that or she stopped taking her medication. Compliance can be an issue, due to significant weight gain side effect commonly associated with medication for the disorder.

Believe me, some mediation used in Psychiatry can have pretty damned unpleasant side effects.

I am surprised nobody stopped her, ok without being there its difficult to say but a fat lady raising her fist at me wouldnt stop me, I think a quick dig might have distracted her from her marathon burnout, I mean it wasnt like the door was locked,

‘I opened the driver’s door wide. It opened easily. The person looked at me - it was a big built woman.

‘I said "You've got to get out of the car. It’s going to burst into flames."

‘But she raised her right fist towards me in a threatening manner before slamming the door shut.

Possibly ramming the Nova might nave stopped it ?

Its easy in hindsight but I am surprised it got that far with people around.
