Hi,

Does anyone know how which companies are UK friendly
when it comes to ordering electronics goods from the States?

I have seen 128Mb memory sticks for $59 or so, but these
places won't ship to UK.

Prices are too good to miss..........

Do you have a mate in the USA who could forward it on?

What type of memory you talking about?

In general it rarely works out any cheaper buying from the US. By the time you add the delivery charges, possibity of import tax (depending on how the vendor describes it on the customs declaration), carriers charge for collecting the duty and VAT then a bargain can end up very expensive. Then there are the warranty or lack of warranty considerations.

Try RSsquire who lives on this BBS - he is based in the states and may be able to forward it to you......

In some circumstances a US resident forwarding an item can make it even more expensive. Additional delivery charge, possibly state sales tax depending on where the vendor has a trading presence.

Even if the item is then declared as a "gift" on the PS2976 customs declaration you may still be unlucky enough to get presented with a duty etc charge when the item is delivered to you.
A lot of US mail order companies will not accept non US credit cards so you also have possible charges in paying the person who is doing you a "favour".

You can source it much cheaper locally.

Try here ...

http://www.dabs.com/crucial/crucial.asp

128Mb PC133 CAS2 for £31.88 which is roughly 45 USD and you will get it the next day

Not only that but crucial memory is well known for being a quality product.

Andrew.

BTW whilst on crucial memory - its always cheaper direct from Crucials Website (www.crucial.com/uk IIRC) - last year I paid £74 all in to get 3 256mb PC2100 DDR DIMMS delivered in under 24hrs - oustanding value and service.

Yeah, sorry, should have been more explicit - SONY memory stick!

It seems Sony has cut prices of these drastically to be in line with CF and SmartMedia memory - but only in USA so far - seems to take ages for this "much cheapness" to work its way into UK prices. :-(

Hence the problem......

Looked at Dabs - they charge £92 for a 128Mb memory stick. A lot more than $59!!!
