Speeding Camera Free Town

BBC NEWS | England | Wiltshire | Town may cut speed camera funding
Yeah right...
Top 100 speed cameras fine drivers £18m - Telegraph
And I suppose those camera's could never be replaced with calming schemes could they?
The government is clear that the best safety camera is the one that takes no fines at all but succeeds in deterring drivers from speeding.

I live in Swindon and this has virtually happened already, a few static cameras are gone or covered up and you very rarely see the plod with a laser camera. If you do they're always in the same place.
Of course I don't condone speeding what-so-ever so this will make no difference to a law abiding citizen such as myself.
PS. Good things to come out of Swindon.....M4!

They only reason they're getting rid of them is that it costs the council to run them, and then they don't get to keep all the revenue that the cameras rake in.
Some are still working though, I see the ones on Blunsdon hill catching people most days.

They interviewed somone on the radio, she said;
'We get a lot of joyriders, without the cameras their speeding will be worse'
Scuse me, they've stolen the car, do you really think a ticket, which won't get as far as them, will bother them?!

Which road is that? I'm struggling to think of anywhere with two cliffs

Originally the councils got all the money from fines, but now of course they just get a grant back from some of the cash.
It will probably mean that people will drive a little bit faster, but if they have any sense they would keep speedcams in dangerous places such as schools, hospitals etc. Its the ones purely to raise revenue which should be binned.
Wonder how many road deaths they tend to get in Swindon anyway. Isn't that the place with the daft set of roundabouts. Bit like the "Scilly Isles" in between Kingston, Surrey and Esher.

As for schools etc just do what they've done by me, and what I've been saying for years is the thing to do. The local school has had a 20mph limit put up BUT only when the lights flash. So an hour or so in the morning and the afternoon. Sorted. No reason to slow down outside those hours (apart from the usual stuff that is). You could even turn them on for weekend events at the school etcf.
But, hey, That's too sensible and actually costs money rather than raises it so there's no chance it'll catch on ...

It is funny seeing the utter horror mixed with confusion when you see someone approach one for the first time.
They almost invariably automatically go round clockwise, rather than take the shortest route.

on another side removing cameras is a bad thing for the average motorist as lets face it its a big box on a stick thats not hidden so you have to be pretty much driving without due care and attention to get caught. To me it means there will be more chance of plod going out and hiding behind bushes etc and I know which I prefer

Never was the old adage, "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it" more apt.

It's easy - you just ignore the complexity and treat each of the mini-roundabouts as a roundabout in its own right, and stop give-way and proceed as you would with any other roundabout. Getting in the correct lane for each one can be an issue, given the short length of some of the approaches but other than that it's easy.
You don't really treat the middle main part of the roundabout as one, as you stop at giveway points as you go round it (the wrong way) - just concentrate on the mini ones and you can't go wrong.
The best part is that there are always multiple ways across it.
