Confused, UK

No and yes. The cards are paired to a particular receiver by Sky. If you take out the card and stick it in another receiver you'll get an on screen message saying to contact Sky on ??????????? to get the card paired to the new receiver. I think it will still record but you'll get a whole recording saying please insert your Sky card. Take out your card and see how many seconds you get without a message.
It was to stop Joe Public's taking own card down the pub to insert card in pubs receiver and getting the footie without paying Sky's high fees for commercial premises.
Andy.

Sounded like a great idea, was convinced by my g/f that we needed it, thought "okay , not bad value, will be useful for various things etc "
Until I found out her real reasons for getting it
Just so she can bloody record Big Bloody Brother

You can't even swap the cards over between bedroom and lounge for instance.

As for the question, echo the above about giving sky a call to pair it with the new box, easy job.
I love Sky+, it's like a little time machine (in my messed up head anyway
)
If you want to upgrade from Sky to Sky+ you can do it yourself. You'd need to change the LNB on the dish as Sky+ or SkyHD boxes need 2 dish inputs so you can watch one channel and record a second at the same time. Should just be a matter of swapping over the connections and then calling Sky to pair the card to receiver.
It is that simple - but you need 2 cables for Sky+
I have an 8 lnb dish with 3 Sky+ boxes one each for me & the wife and one for the kids.
Personally, I always install bigger discs into the boxes as week - the 2 std boxes have 300Gb and the HD one has 500Gb and we still fill them......

Yes, you need LNB with at least 2 outputs, usually its a quad so that you can multiroom with 2 Sky+ boxes or SkyHD, 2 = feeds per receiver. Connect it up, ring Sky to pair card and pay any additional fee to enable record function and that's it. I'm not sure what the current situation over Sky+ fee is. It used to be £10 per month extra unless you paid £30 a month subs, but I got a feeling they dropped that, you pay £10 per month extra for HD still. Could always ring Sky and ask, they were doing refurb Sky+ boxes for £49 or poss even free if you asked or said you were thinking of cancelling. Deal was being offered to keep you on board.
