The Road to hell and all that
Well the road may be paved with good intentions but my **** is feeling every flaming bump!
First proper ride on my bike this year and do I warm up with say 15-20 miles? Maybe push it a bit and go for 25?
Nope. 40 bloody miles and my legs were like jelly by the end of it. If I made ANY kind of effort I cramped up and didn't dare stop for fear of siezing up and not being able to carry on. I got through both 1.5 litre bottles and was still gasping by the end
I mean a flaming canal bridge became a nightmare in the last 5 miles... Oh God that last one hurt!
For those younger, fitter, black run without body armour types: Bugger Off. I'm 41 trying to stave off heart disease and only love cycling as a form of keep fit. Oh plus I'm 15 stone and WAY out of shape so 40 miles is nothing short of a miracle.
I just wish miracles didn't hurt quite so much

It started off as a "can I do the 14 miles to work okay still" ride and I kind of got carried away.
I think it was the wrong turn I made... mind you that bit I found was stonking to ride on.
I also discovered that there is a back road way between Shelton Lock and Sinfin that completely cuts out the A50 (for those that know Derby) which came as a complete surprise

I'd like to remind you of my "Now I am a man thread" Re-read that and know that I NEVER have a problem with dumps
Thing is: I know I'm going to suffer for this in the morning, but I reckon if I chuck in a quick 20 miler on Wednesday I should be okay. I have a great route out to Uttoxter worked out

Come to think of it I am doing a 40 miler next weekend for the heart foundation if I have the dates correct.
I've not been out on the bike AT ALL this year LOL, that's going to be a wake up call!

You've inspired me. I may be over 10 years younger, but if you can do a ride like that, then I'll have a crack at it too

I'm 31 and trying to stave off heart disease and big bellyitis! My bike saw daylight for the first time yesterday too! It's an MTB but I got some slicks for it, what a difference they make! I did a massive 6 miles and this morning I'm walking like John Wayne! To be fair though, the entire route is uphill, poxy Yorkshire Dales!

I thoroughly enjoy cycling and to be honest even at the end when I was really flagging I found I could just keep going and going. If I had more water to drink (and salt!) I could've staved off the cramps which were ultimately the limiting factor.
I do have the advantage of a legacy of cycling when I was younger - I am out of shape but I have legs like tree trunks, so the strength is there, I just need to get fitter (and slimmer!)
Now I know I can do the work run easily enough I'm going to sort out using the showers at the office, so I can cycle in whenever it's sunny.

I always thought the 'road to hell' was the m25 - turns out it the road to S****horpe.

I used to cycle when my office was closer to home. Saw the boss in the showers once..
Seriously good for you though if you do cycle daily. I saved loads in fuel bills too!

As the weather's triffic this week, I'll be cycling to work and back every day. Its only 14kms or so each way, but the route is nice and also quite flat, which is why its 30mins is doable without really breaking sweat.
