Default Barcode readers on mobile phones - cool application

Since last night I've been trying to figure out why I would want a barcode reader on my phone but, having played around with it a bit this morning I've now decided it's the coolest thing on the planet

There's a site here where you can generate your own barcodes QR-Code Generator

And here's one I made earlier for you lot who are as sad as me

I think you are on your own here, though I am sure those out of work or bored housewives may join in

BMI are using these instead of boarding cards for check-in at LHR.

Looking at the price of stuff for sale? Most things in supermarkets etc won't have a price on them and the ticket on the shelf might be missing. I'm just guessing as I've got a battered and old Nokia and haven't the latest 'must have' upgrade

Unless you're connected to their stock database, scanning the product barcode won't help you

Maybe that's the nest upgrade for a mobile, a roaming database of supermarkets databses?

You're just jealous because you haven't got one

I'm using mine on my N95 8GB and it works fine Anyway it's keeping me amused

I'm a bit disappointed that no-one has deciphered my special message above yet though. I knew it was a waste of time embedding those naked shots in that barcode

So what's the actual use for it then. Creating cryptic messages that only those with bar-code reading phones can read? Or for booking in on flights. Sounds thrilling, lol.
Sounds kinda cool but pointless

Oh, I thought you were keeping us in suspense and there was a secret amazing use for it. Fair do's, just a funky gimmick.

These are different sorts of bar codes, they're not the one's with the lines and numbers that you get on tins of beans or porno mags, they look more like a grid that has different parts of it coloured in. Im not sure what the difference really is or what they can be used for but the Nokia N95 has a barcode reader built in.

I couldn't read Scoobychicks barcode as my monitor was too bright and the bar code reader couldn't focus properly but I created one for myself and it worked ok.

It is just a funky gimmick at the moment as far as I can see although the info I've read says it can be used to embed things like website URLs and stuff. Apparently it's used in some magazines but I've not seen it yet.

Anyway, for those of you that think it's fun, here's another message:

One cool use would be to initiate one-click ordering online. You (discreetly) scan an item in a shop, or something you already have at home, and up pops a list of suppliers, ordered by price. The phone has your credit card details stored in its digital wallet, and hey presto, it turns up the next day courtesy of DHL.

That would be very good

There's a barcode system on some food packaging now which can be scanned by a Smart Scan oven to programme itself to cook the item perfectly

The Nokia barcode reader can't use it though, I tried it It's probably for the best otherwise I could've ended up cooking my garlic bread with my phone which would've been a bit messy

Come on, someone on here must be able to do this, I feel like the geeky kid at school that no-one wants to play with

You're not supposed to read the URL

I'm a cheat, I've been reading the URL too.

Saying that I don't have a funky barcode reader though.

I wondered how long it would take for you to turn up gloating again

There will be someone on here eventually who appreciates the finer aspects of barcode reading, mark my words

Anyone who reads the barcode are not going to admit to knowing what it says anyway, or are they?
