Threw a stick for her at the lake and it stuck in the ground like a spear - just as she grabbed it with her mouth.

It was pushed down her throat, she was running around squealing and pawwing at her mouth - she snapped the stick in half as I was trying to catch her!

Then she chewed another chunk off while trying to get it out .... by the time I reached her and opened her mouth I could just see the top of the stick at the back of her tongue!!!!

I was trying to hold her mouth open and pull the stick out but couldn't do both - the wife reached me atthis point so I held the dogs mouth open while the wife tried to get the stick out ..... there was a lot of blood!!

Finally after a frantic 5 minutes the stick came out - covered in blood - the dog looked shocked and unsteady on her feet ...... but then, 10 minutes later, she was running around and swimming like normal ..... I really thought we were about to lose her as the stick was stuck fast!

Got home and put her food out, it's too painful for her to eat and she has left it ..... I have given her a parecetamol (sp?) and she has settled a bit.

She is dribbling some blood and doesn't look too good ... her breathing is fine and she just seems sad for herself.

Will see what tomorrow brings ... I'm a bit worried

if someone rammed a stick down your throat, then ripped it out, i would think unless you were on cocaine you would visit a hospital. i am sure a man with your remarkable keyboard skills could sort out a vet.imo of course.

 

Emergency vet will only cost about £80, do it now!

And don't throw sticks for dogs

It's not that uncommon, which is why most dog owner's know that you shouldn't actually throw sticks for your dog.

 

I had to "collect" a tennis ball out of my lab's throat a few years back.
Was quite difficult as is was all slimey - really hard to grasp hold of!

Pete - in the event this isn't a windup, get her to the vets just to make sure...

*EDIT* the ball was in the back garden from when we were playing "bat'n'ball"........

 

Contacted the Vet just now.

She was concerned that we got all the stick out - which we did, the stick was simply too big to have left anything behind.

The dibbling a small amount of blood wasn't a worry to the vet - but, she said, it's our call whether we want to call her out top open the surgery.

I don't think so ...... the vet did not seem too concerned to be honest!

You lot sent the fear of god up me!!

Just taken her out for a quick stroll round the block, she was eager to go but was a step behind me rather than her usual step in front.

Had the Vet said get her down her right now I would be there ... the vet was primarily interested if we thought there was part of the stick still in her throat - other than that she didn't seem too concerned at all.

The cost is secondary to my dogs welfare - that's aimed at those who would suggest otherwise!

 

Dogs are hugely resiliant Pete - she's probably fine...BUT, she may be worse than she's showing.

For peace of mind if nothing else, its worth a check.

 

Either you're trolling again, or you're just being tight. Given that half of your posts are trolling posts and the other half are tedious money saving tips, it's very difficult to say which it is this time.

 

Mr Lewis -in some ways I hope this isn't wind up, and in some ways I hope it is!!

I would agree with everyone else who has said it - get the vet to check the dog out - even if they say nothing is wrong, then at least she/he has been checked..

I don't want to alarm you, but something may happen during the night, and you will never forgive yourself if you had the chance to get her checked but didn't..

I hope he/she is okay.

Well that's 13 people on this thread who have now advised you to go to the vets, compared to 0 people who have said don't go to the vets.

I'm watching her like a hawk ...... the paracetamol is wearing off as she is looking less drousy.

The dribbling has reduced somewhat, with less blood and more salava.

She legs it when I go to her with the kitchen towel to wipe her chops - she is still very aware of what is going on around her, I have to chase her around to get to her before it drips on the carpet!

 

Pete, keep your eye on her food intake. My friend's dog did a similar thing with a stick and unbeknown to him a small part of it was lodged in his throat. He wasn't able to eat properly and got quite weak which is what alerted my friend to the problem. The vet had to remove it surgically.

Stop trolling, it's not big and it's not clever .... the thread was an information thread - I don't think I asked for advice, but I listened to it in any event and contacted my Vet.

She hasn't eaten her dinner ..... but we are talking a GSD here, they are fussy eaters. If she was a Lab I would be much more concerned at the lack of appettite.
