My poor wife was left stranded tonight and the RAC man could not fix it. It
is waiting at the Peugeot dealers for them to have a look at tomorrow.

It is a 97P 406 V6 saloon with 43000 miles.

Tonight my wife unlocked it with the remote and tried to start the engine -
it turned over but would not start until she put the immobiliser keypad code
in - it is programmed just to start after the remote has unlocked things.
She then drove off and a few miles down the road the revs dropped to zero
and it stalled. The red AND green immobiliser lights came on and she could
not restart it using the code. Later it did start but then intermittently
died. The RAC man had no bypass instructions, but the car was driveable, but
stalling every few minutes. He and I suspected a dodgy connection somewhere
and jiggled every connector we could find. The battery is fine, and when the
engine is on it is as smooth as ever.

I know from previous dealings that a lot of Peugeot dealers are pathetic,
hence I ask for your ideas on what it might be. I can just imagine them
saying - new ECU and immobilier required £1000 please.

If the immobiliser has completely gone, I suspect it would be cheaper
bypassing it and paying £200 for a Category One alarm to be fitted if this
is possible.

I am just hoping it is a dodgy connection, but I don't know whether they
will be bothered to look for it or will just start replacing everything and
see £££ signs.

Thanks for ANY ideas.

This French crap

The CAT1 installer will charge for taking out the existing set-up - if he/she can, but would be the best bet if the Dealer wants to fleece you!!

Hope you get it sorted - a loose connection has to be favourite!

Not sure but I think the keypad is connected to the ecu, ther is a way to disable it but I don't know it. Peugeot do! but will probably not admit it as it makes a mockery of there security.

Phone Coventry Peugeot Specilists in Wolston or Peugeot Ecosse in Scotland I think they might be able to help.

john,if they can't sort it give me a shout,I found a good auto electrican when I put a MY98 GTI 16v engine in my MY90 GTI.the looms were different and the immobiliser was a bastad,it was in a number of garages inc. the specialist ones and none of them got the car running,he came out and had it running with in 20 min.

if it is in Pug. Kirkcaldy he will probably be the one fixing it anyway,as he does alot of work for local dealers.

Main dealer sorted it out with 5 hours labour, but no parts so about 200+VAT. Apparently there were two broken wires between the immobiliser and ECU and the immobiliser and somewhere in the engine bay. French crap. How do two wires go at once?
