Terminally ill illegal sent home to Ghana
Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Personally, provided immigration acted within the law, I don't have a problem with the removal, she had plenty of time to address the immigration issue even if she is terminally ill.

The US system leaves some 40m with little or no care due to not being able to afford it, Whilst the NHS is not perfect, it could be made a lot better with proper guidance and care.
It only seems right to treat non nationals if we have sufficient healthcare and facilities, no waiting lists to treat the UK (if you see what i mean). If not then the very people who do cointribute will stop and the system will collapse and we will end up with a US alike system.
Have a look at
BBC NEWS | Health | 'Health tourism' rules unveiled
Saw an interesting programme (C4 i think) on health tourism some while ago, perhaps we should stop threating those who just come here to use our system then clear off without either being a british citizen or contributing to the system (if an
adult). Lot of SSA folks (and some Europeans) travelling to the Uk for treatment which is free, a lot cheaper to purchase a ticket to fly to the Uk and get the treatment for free which if avaliable at home costs a lot more.

Someone should simply phone the Ghana High Commission in London and say if they are prepared to fund Private treatment we will look after her. If not, off she goes. dl

).speaking to some Americans and it was amazing to hear that they would love an NHS style medical service as you've said lots of people are left without treatment, not just the poor but many working class Americans can't afford medical bills.
We're a hell of a long way off offering free health care to other countries. The NHS is haemorraging the billions being thrown at it and after 11 years is showing little improvement in terms of diagnosis to treatment times (those are different from waiting list lengths)
Mixed feelings on this one.... are we not civilised human beings? should we not help this lady who will certainly die without our intervention....
And there in lies the problem we do have waiting lists (except if you're famous or convicted killer
).

interesting what you say about it not just being low income people who cannot afford medical care, that is bad news!
Have a look at the link i posted above, NL showing a little backbone and support for its citizens and the NHS (for once) i know it is an old artical but even so it seems they are folllowing through?!?

I would welcome us adopting a US-style system.

There really are no winners here at all, i suppose the only concellation (for want of a better word) is that someone else will get the treatment in her place this saving another life. Does not make me feel warm and fuzzy about the situation.
Whilst i b*tch on about the NHS i am glad we have it and grateful it will be there if i need it. I would like to see some improvements mind.
The real background to the story would be interesting. I wonder who took the decision to throw her out of hospital?
I thought doctors had a duty to look after patients irrespective of their circumstances so I would find it hard to believe that a doctor willingly allowed this poor woman to be discharged knowing that proper treatment would not be ongoing. What do you reckon? dl

[QUOTE]Are you saying that there are curretly people suffering with life threatening disease not already getting treatment on the NHS? If that is the case then I would have to (reluctantly) agree with you.

I do not know the in's and out's of this case.
I think you will find that the neither the dialysis equipment or operating theatre will stand idle nor any kidneys will be binned due to a lack of other people in desperate need of them or the facilities.
If that was the case then that would be a very sad day.

Free Health Care !!!!
We all pay our taxes so its not free
I guess would you want someone following you round at Tesco's and throwing there shopping in trolley at the checkout ?
I heard on 5 live last night she also complained that her children would also not get an education now because only Primary Education is state funded back home
Its very simple really
But when you see the faces it suddenly doesn't become that simple
as said above there are no winners only loses in this case

Is it morally wrong if a British citizen is missing out on treatment because she is being treated instead?

From: Tellins, Home of Super Leagues finest, and where a "split" is not all it seems.
I don't know, are there dialysis machines and suitably qualified operators sitting around in Wales doing nothing?
ETA:
It would seem probably not - Health tourists may deny NHS patients kidneys

It was publisised many years ago, that OAP were being put on ever longer waiting lists for say Hip operations, as the Government/Hospital were giving Immigrants priority.
Same as the Village that I grew up in applied for a Government grant to get some much needed repair work done to the communal village hall.
They were refused on the basis that the Village had no ethnic minorities and no immigrants. I kid you not.
