Speed cameras.......How do they work?

Hi,
Basically how do speed cameras work and are they all the same.
I guess that they sense you are speeding and photograph the front of your car if you're speeding.Is this right?
The reason i ask is that last MOT my car failed.One thing was wrong.The front number plate was wrong.Two of the letters were the swapped round.No-one including me had noticed for 3 years.
Got me thinking,if i had been caught by a speed camera,and photographed from the front,would i have got away with it?
