IMO, after owning/using several different sat nav's, you can't beat this:

And stopping every 10 miles to check the map really isn't a pain in the backside!
I spose you don't have a television either? Why have one when you can listen to the wireless?

Sat-navs are fantastic, end of.
Tom Tom was excellent when I borrowed one from work a while back. Didn't put a foot wrong in over 400miles.

I have a Garmin i3 (I think). Not sure if they make it anymore but it is easy.

Reality is you will probably use it twice a year unless like the Sat Nav obsessed you don't know

1.Your route to work
2.Where your relatives live
3.Where the garden centre is
4.Where petrol stations are
5.How to get to the end of your road

I had a NavMan which was pants - returned to shop.

I have seen a Medion in action - utter pile of crap that was.

I hate with a vengence following the crowd, but, I must admit - my Tom Tom is outstanding.

Consider that Garmin make military sat nav systems, i would opt for one by Garmin and having used Garmin hand helds in a number of countries other then the UK i must say they are rather good!
I am planning on getting a Garmin Nuvi 770 after crimbo.

Used TomTom for years - nothing but praise for them. I currently have a TT720 which is fantastic, but if you don't need one that flash, then the One XL is more than adequate.

Now if that isn't a reason to avoid them, I don't know what is!

I have used various Sat Navs, none are perfect but TomTom is simple to use and has a great interface. With the Camera DB installed it avoids the need for a separate Road Angel etc. Just be careful to wipe the sucker mark off the windscreen and not to leave it in the car. I had my PDA system nicked out of the boot and my window smashed all because they scum saw the sucker mark!

Now have an IPAQ hw6915 which is a phone, PDA and SatNav in one, no separate antenna. Comes in handy when walking round London trying to find a customer is some god forsaken little backwater.

On the subject of mounts and what Olly has said - invest in a Brodit clip with a removable mount - holds the sat nav far better than any screen mount and is far less obvious if placed down on the dashboard / air vent.

I have a TomTom ONE, i wouldn't recommend it to be honest... Battery life is terrible, and if it's turned off it still drains the battery so in theory it has to be on charge 24/7, and they don't even supply you with a mains charger!
