Unhappy Advice on kittens/cats

Had our own sad day last night. Got home yesterday and our 8 year cat lily was obviously un-well, we took her straight to the vets but she died in ours arms just as we got there Mrs chopper is very upset, lily had been fine, not any sign of illness and has been such a shock.

So I would like to get a new furry friend but would like some advice on a kitten as I'm unsure as to how much they need looking after etc in the first few weeks. We both work full time so are not about in the day, would that be a problem? Any other advice on which is the best way to go would be much appreciated.

We got our cats from Cats Protection.... they wouldn't let you have any cats under 6 months old if you work full-time (because of the extra attention they require). We got ours at pretty much exactly 6 months old and it worked out great, they were still small enough for us to enjoy the 'kitten' stage but big enough to look after themselves!!

chop,

Sorry to hear about your cat, a sad experience

Have you thought about getting an adult cat from an animal sanctuary or the likes. Many come with a full history so you know exactly how old they are, you get so see their personality (which can change from when they are a kitten) and the sanctuaries struggle to home adult cats more than kittens so you would be doing them a favour.

Just a thoiught.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I'd wait for a month or so and let the pain fade a bit.

Then as above, a young adult cat.

So did my misses.
She works part time - 3 days a week.

But she got the cat home at 10 weeks.

Didn't take much looking after - within an hour it knew where the crapper tray was and used it (Crist, cats don't half stink when they take a dump)

It only ever got dried food as the last cat she had was a really fussy bollox.

I think its about 1.5 years old now?

Downsides of having a kitten - leather suite completly fecked.

I would wait a bit too. I had a near hysterical Mrs Eddscott on the phone a few years ago telling me that our cat had been knocked down outside our house. Not nice having to drive over the splat mark every day.

We waited a very long time after and I needed quite alot of persuasion to get another.

The girl we got our current cat off kept saying "Her" so we let our daughter name the cat Fi Fi. When we went to get the first jabs, the vet said "Fi Fi?, thats an odd name for a boy" We hadn't checked and when they're small its hard to tell visually. He used to sport a fine pair - poor sod!

Think twice if your the lightest sleeper in the house. My lad knows he can wake me up to let him out at 6am. Very annoying as my wife and daughter sleep through it.

bad enough when expected, terrible as a surprise...my sympathies to you and Mrs Chop.

Another vote for Cats Protection League, they will want to perform a home check and all their cats are neutered and chipped. They have loads of centres round the country...good luck.

Sorry for your loss mate.
The mrs and I have just bought an 8 week old tabby kitten.
We both work full time, but marie works close to home so she pops back at lunch to check on little Murphy.
He had already been litter trained and has caused no mess or problems since we picked him up on Saturday.
He even watches motorsport on the telly!

Having just been through that Chop, I know very well how you and Mrs Chop will be feeling.

We have just taken on a three year old cat to replace poor Floyd. He is house trained, very fit, and is very affectionate and friendly. When they are a little older like that you can see hteir real personality. He has fitted in with us straightaway.

Another vote for the Cats Protection League.

We got an adult cat from there and although she died a couple of years ago, she was great and loved our little boy!

We got the first one, about 12 months old, from the National Animal Welfare Trust - they did quite a few checks on us and also came round to the flat after we'd had her a few weeks.
The second psycho came from Cats Protection. They didn't do any checks on us at all which we found odd and we haven't heard from them since. She's settled in quite well now and is a totally different cat from when we first got her 4 yrs ago.

I got to pick our latest kittens name - Ghengis.

Little **** is growing into his name

Kittens / cats don't really need that much attention tbh - after about 2 weeks you may aswell not be there - apart from opening the food and the doors for them.

You haven't met Ghengis - little ******* would sit at a cat flap miowing until you held it open for him.

And he'd bite you on the way out

He's lovely really - he only bites the missus - cos she's scared of him (when he's in I want to play mode).

When he's in I'm a cute Kitten mode he's fine.

The trick is spotting when he's switching modes

Never show fear! They pick up on it. I bet he's a real character!

She's a Cornish Rex. Brilliant cats, the loveliest nature, and frighteningly bright!

Cats used to be worshipped as gods, and they have never forgotten it!

I know its an old one, but true.
