Default For boaties - Fisher 46

After three years in the making (!!!) this steel 46ft Fisher will be coming into the country (currently at Start Point) this afternoon - the inlaws have bought the moulds and plan to make a few more if anyone wants one.
Steel, 29 tonnes (worse than an Audi!), 180bhp engine that more or less moves it along, wooden bits, three bedrooms, saily bits and a fridge.

Going to see it tomorrow in the Landy we are testing for the day.

Not the most attractive, but it will cope with anything the oceans throw at it. Unless the ocean throws a tanker.

Looks nice.

My in laws having something a bit smaller.

They are all over the country in it, never at home, which is good.

Cheers

Why steel rather than the normal fibreglass?

Looks like it's got self furling sails too I'm not really into motor crusiers, if I were to for something around that size it'd probably be a C&C 41 or Beneteau 47, though a schock 35 does appeal

Leslie - It was a long and agonising decision (which I was involved in).
Of the 15 made so far, only two are steel but it has improved a lot since (this is the first for 15 years) so:

Steel is tougher, easier to repair, does not absorb any water and can be temporarily "bodged" on the move if needed.
If anyone did want one, they can have it in steel or GRP.

Good point on the moulds - they used them to get the shape of the boat and so if anyone wants a GRP one, they can. The steel fabrication has been a very tough and arduous process but I think it's worth it/
Basically if anyone wants a 38ft or less, they go to Northshore, if they want anything bigger, they call father in law who owns the rights to anything over this size after buying them from NS. Got to NS though and ask for a 46ft Fisher and they'll say they aren't made any more - cheeky gits!
You should see the inside - veeery nice - in fact just like this:

Thanks Matt, all understood now. Yes it is a very nice looking boat, makes my old Shetland look a bit below par. But hell, its only meant for fishing anyway and it will handle a bit of rough water quite well for an oldie.

No I can't afford one!

How long before the rust streaks appear

very nice Matteboy - and you still reckon your poor

My ole man had in ingrid fibreglass ketch similar size which he got cheap ,hull had been 10 years in building out the water and put it all together
- sailed to Fiji ( from the states )
Now has a Peterson 44 ,still center cockpit.

- Ill bet still a fraction the cost of that baby ..

Les/dpb - Well it's not mine (!) - we only have our little speedboat!
They have gone to vast lengths to ensure no rust appears and it was about the only time I used knowledge from my Mat Eng degree to lend a bit of a hand!
I think it will get well looked after though.

I do like Shetlands - Quite fancy a Merry Fisher (in a similarish vein) for when I'm a bit older and less worried about going fast and waterskiing!

Summer was cack but it's been nice recently - been out quite a lot on our boat.
She's coming up soon though (on a pontoon mooring) for a service and a scrub up.

Do they still make Fishers?

My old man had a Fisher 30 built in 1976. He was always off up to the boat show. (strange for a man who could not swim).

When I was old enough, it became my Saturday 'treat' to help him pump out the damn bilges every week.

Still good memories though! The sails lived in our loft at home and the sail lockers were always full off beer. I think it only left the marina about 10 times in its life

Holy crap, the Fisher is absolutely lovely!
Never seen such lovely teak decking (loads of it) and the interior is like a very nice house - nice kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms.
Also very safe and built to take a lot of abuse - Love it.
