Swimming Pool Heaters

Swimming Pool Heaters
Got a bargain big pool for the kids, complete with filter pump and thought I'd spoil them on an upcoming birthday. Also considering a small heater to make it less goosebumpy [I know, Daddy wraps them in cotton wool] Are these heaters any good, or is it an expensive affair and needs to be left on constantly?
Saw this on e-bay and might be worth a £35 punt?

Yes its a Blue Pool 3m round and was only £45 [if it lasts the summer I'll be happy]. The heater doesnt pump - needs to be in series with the pump I think. Still, at under £100 for well happy kids and a chance to read the paper in the garden is a bargain!

That size of pool, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Kids don't feel the cold and you will be surprised how 'refreshing' it can be during the summer.
Oi, sara, this is a community forum, lets not talk about chemicals here

................ and if you want to water the garden, you pull the plug on the pool and then top-up later.

As for running costs, the price of a kW/hour is about 7p (£0.07), so if it's a 3kW heater, it will cost about 21p per hout to run. I was informed that you'll need to run it for about 48 hours to get the water up to temperature, then cycle it on/off. With it running constantly it will cost about £5 per day! This was for a 15 foot pool.

You need a solar cover mate,we have a 15 ft one and last year it got up to 27 degrees the year before with no cover only 19,also get some shorty wetsuits as these make the kids go in it all the time and you also need the right chemicals or it will go green and its a waste of time.A submersible pump is also good with a cloth over it for extra filter and good fountain and swirls.
Dig it half in the ground, insulate the sides and make a solar heater.

So now I need wetsuits, solar covers, have to dig a hole, build a power station, bleach the kids and get in myself!!! It's all getting out of hand
Seriously great advice all round - thanks. A handful of the nicest possible nasty chemicals seems a good idea - what should I use?
Thanks for the Costco tip that'll also save £12 postage alone - just changed job and now pass one every day

Build a redneck pool heater:
One gas BBQ, couple of old radiators off a few scrap cars (with metal, not plastic end tanks), rads ontop of bbq, connect all the pipes, switch on pump, fire up teh BBQ and away you go
Or if you want to be really posh; build your own heat exchanger out of old copper off-cuts

$250 = £125...he was a redneck though...the feejit used NEW copper pipes and joints
A clever person would have used old pipe or the heat exchanger off a defunct boiler
