Default Diesel vs Red Diesel

I just wanted to know whats the difference between the 2 i know that red diesel does not get charged tax but is there any actual difference in the quality or is it all the same thing???????????

Also any other information about red diesel would be good.

Thanx

Red diesel is red so if the law do a spot check on a normal diesel car and look at the colour of the diesel they can establish if the driver is using untaxed red stuff or white taxed stuff. Using red in your standrard family car is illegal due to it not being taxed as it is only meant to be used by hauliers and the like.

big no no for hauliers too, tractors (so long as they don't do too many miles on the road), generators etc. or any vehicle not being used on the public roads basicly

Hi Zedf
Yes there is a difference between red and white diesel
Red or gasoil as i know it is higher in sulpher and has a lower cetain number which makes it more smokey and gives less power.
To a trainned eye a road car on red stands out like a sore thumb on hard acceleration.

Cheers hope tthis helps Dixie.

As above. Vehicles running on red are often easy to spot and the consequence can be a very heavy fine and immediate impounding of the vehicle and confiscation in some cases.

its very confusing as to who can use red and who cant i know of a few farmer friends that have to us white in there fasttracks as they are moving diggers around from site to site so it is seen and haulaging!! as for sweeps we run two at work one tank is white for the main engine that moves it and one tank for red which runs the donky engine now i also know a few big contracters that run sweepers for a living and they all do the same so either were all doing some thing wrong and spending money were we dont need to or im right the ONLY time a sweeper can run both tanks on red as if it isnt going to be used on the road and is working on site ie and air field or big building site !!

Marine diesel is red. Just as well that it is cheap - an Arun class lifeboat at full speed ( 2 485 bhp 18-litre V8 Cats) burned 45 gallons per hour. A Severn has 2 1000 bhp V12 Cats. God knows what one of them uses.

when was the last time you saw a car being dipped at the side of the road? my guess is never.. the only time vehicles are dipped is at agriculture events usually.

I have been pulled in the lorry a few times and its never been dipped.

You are best mixing it to thin it down...otherise you could run into trouble without some mods... Anyway.. If the police do come at the back of you you best kill the engine or you will be in serious trouble.....It stinks just like a fish and chip shop

You can run your car on veg oil as long as you pay duty of 45p per litre. Still half price though. I wouldn't try it in a common rail though.....just asking for big engine trouble.
