Light bulb outlawing - some issues ...

I thought there was already a thread on the EU outlawing conventional bulbs and forcing us all to go 'green'. Always have had issues with laws like this that dictate choice! Take a look at Australian Ban on Incandescent Lamps for some more facts about 'energy efficient' bulbs etc. I never knew they needed ventilation for example. That will explain why the one in my enclosed bathroom light went pop!
But some of the issues raised make you think ....

Other issues such as the wall lights we have only just take a thin "candle" type bulb - no way you'd get a big bulk flourescent jobbie in there. So are the government going to pay to replace all my light fittings?
The energy efficient flourescent bulbs only make sense to use in places where you would leave the light on for long periods. Constant switching on and off is a
as this uses a lot more energy than the convential bulbs.

That's a bit of a myth actually. There is a surge in current at first, but only equivalent to about 5 seconds of normal operation.

Oh, and they can stick mercury in your mouth as well. Even though it's banned over most of thr world as one of the most toxic substances in the known and unknown universe ....

Next week - insulating your cave with environmentally-friendly, biodegradable leaves.
I'm completely greened-out with all the propaganda, disinformation and indoctrination. I'm going to find some sandal-wearing nut-eater, offset my carbon with him and then go and burn some old tyres outside the local council offices just for the hell of it.

Thanks for reminding me, I want to go for a poo in the downstairs loo in an hour or so if I filck the light on the bulb should be up to its full (i.e not very) brightness and the laptop will be charged....
What these pseudo-tree-hugging morons conveniently forget is that no matter what technology is used in "lighting", pretty much every nano-watt ends up as heat - whether fluorescent, incandescent or LED.
Now lets face it - we tend to use lights much more in winter - you know, that time of year when it gets cold (lets ignore the greenhouse conspiracy for now). So, for every watt "saved" with your expensive, complicated, large, impractical, useless CFLs, you need to crank up your central heating by one watt to compensate for the loss of the extra heat source.
Still, Philips shareholders will do quite well

Turn off your heating system for a night and try and keep warm on lightbulbs alone and you'll see what i mean
qwerty - That is the daily mail ffs - try doing your own 'research'
Tel - we have a new house which is apparently carbon neutral (ok it was until I installed a large stove in the middle of the kitchen which makes the local coal fired power station look like a member of greenpeace) but we have down lighters, spots, wall lights and floor lights in every room. Every one is dimmable and every one uses 'low energy' bulbs. (The danger here is that her indoors thinks that low energy = zero cost, so 'mood lighting' results in the whole house looking like National Lampoons Christmas Vacation)

I bought a GU10 CFL bulb to replace a halogen GU10 that was in an awkward place.....Lasted two days.
I replaced it with another of the same, that one lasted a week. In fact, I still have the bulb sat besides me on the deak in bits, in hope I can repair whatever gizmoid in the circuitry that blew (filaments in the tube seem ok), as that little ****** cost me £10 and I'll be damned if I'm going to throw it away before I've had the rated 5000hours out of it. LOL.

- Honest One in my bathroom suddenly failed last week too... in a globe enclosure aas well - still probably better than allowing any moisture near the thing from what he says!
But the (techy) power factor thing is quite stunning really. The fact that the power station needs to generate ~ 40 watts to run a 20 watt CFL
- making them environmentally only 1/2 as efficient as they would appear
- and then the fact that to get the same brightness you really need 1/2 the wattage of an incandescant not 1/4
which brings you to the startling conclusion that the overall energy cost is the same as an incandescant bulb - except that the heating effect occurs outside & in the power station rather than giving a bit of heat to your home to assist the central heating system! - so you then require to run your central heating for 15 mins extra to maaintain the same ambient temperature in your home
All this dictated to us by a few unelected dictators behind closed doors in Brussels...
Mick
This is all pants, but they think its going to save the world. But one paper (cant remember which) showed the Whitehall offices left with all their light on for most of the night.
UK only produces 2 per cent of the worlds Co2 so the change in bulbs really will make a huge difference!
