Weren't Logistic Link investigated on Watchdog the other week? Something about taking your money for signing up with them and then not giving you any work if I remember correctly.
Ah, Found a link:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/tv_and...20060411.shtml

Hi Puff,
was thinking of augmenting my current work to maybe going fulltime courier.
Owner driver, or part/full time with company depending on opportunities.
will be living/working in MK42 area, (bedford) with MK, Northampton, Cambridge, Luton in close-ish vicinity.
Am looking for ways to get started and build up. Any advice v welcome
Glenn.

Company called London Link of Milton Keynes 01908 315 315 - ask for Dale (I think!) & see what he has going. Good reputable firm in that area. Tell him James from eCourier sent you.
They may have enough for you fulltime or be able to use you on an ad-hoc basis depending on availability. Ask them what vehicle to get but I would aim at least a Nissan Primastar size - they are economical enough to run and more versatile/comfortable than a Peugot Partner type thing.
You will need a SatNav (postcode to postcode), maps of the UK (for overall planning) a mobile phone (handsfree) and I would suggest membership of one of the larger breakdown clubs.
You will have to be reliable, flexible, on time always and willing to work even if it is a cack job. In this way you will build up their trust and confidence etc. Also pride in apearance both of your vehicle and yourself. Most of it is commonsense. Couriers who are able to be and do the above are prized as nearly anybody can drive a van with a box in it - you need to shine above that.
They will dictate the rate at which you get paid and it will be the miles travelled on the journey from a - b. You won't get paid for empty miles. Couldn't say how much you'll earn but hard workers should easily gross £500 but as I said depends on what they may/may not be able to offer you in terms of work.
If they can't help, I know of some other companies in the area you're based in but I would say MK or Northampton are the better areas to chose based on the amount of business in those towns.
HTH but any questions, fire away. Let me know how you get on.

cheers Puff, great advice/tips, and thanks for the lead; even ad-hoc would be good for a foot in the door.
The other stuff comes almost naturally, ( i think says he)
sat nav will get to grips with ( IT support background)
I could even do a deliver & install for computer vendors hmmmm
