As the Mrs pointed out, it might be natural in the 3rd world where its either breast feed your kids or they die of malnutrition but there is no excuse for it in the developed world where you have all the food you could possibly want. Life or death its understandable, through choice is just wrong.

There would be an awful lot of Middle Eastern parents locked up if you had your way then, +Doc+; seven isn't that unusual over there. It's a Western thing that breast feeding is considered abnormal after the first year or so...

Eh? I am saying that if its the only food available or the child dies of malnutrition then there isn't a choice is there. Thats hardly the same in the Western world where a child should be being given readily available food. What happens at lunch time at school, the mum pops in, wops her t!ts out in the canteen and starts feeding little freddie in front of all his class mates?

But you're arguing it purely from a Western ideological standpoint, Bob. There's no doubt that breast milk is nutritionally better, and some would even say there are psychological benefits from extending the mother/child bond that breast feeding affords, but whether they "should" be given alternatives just because of our Western sensibilities and ideals is open to some debate...

Apparently I have heard that down south in the USA some cults still believe in drinking breast milk to protect your immune system. Imagine a 40 year old grown man clamped onto his momma's 75 yr old nipples!!!

Tel I disagree from a medical point of view from my experience/what I have been told. My youngest is extremely allergic to cows milk and therefore we have spent a fair few appointments with a consultant paedatrician (sp?) discussing the pros and cons of various types of milk.
The medical view that we were told is that ideally they believe babies should be weaned off of breast milk from 6 months of age to about 12 months. It is only for this first 6 months that they should have it throughout the day due to its high fat content and the benefits for the childs immune system. After this it is recomended to get the child less dependant on milk and feed more on solid food gradually decreasing the milk intake until by the time of 2 years of age when they shouldn't be having milk as a meal in its own right at all.
In the 3rd World thats not an option when there isn't any food to give them. A child should be on solid food for meals from the age of 2 years so breast feeding after this is simply wrong, if not for moral reasons but purely for the medical side of things.

sorry but, it's the mothers decision and her own choice, if she wants to breastfeed her child till he's 15, then she should be able to. Breast milk is the most perfect food for any kid, and adapts to the childs age and needs, it also has anti bodies etc in it so i am thinking this 7 year old kid is lucky enough to have maybe a fantastic immune system, bones, nerves etc, and i see no pervestness in a mother feeding her child in the most natural way there is! The child doesn't necessary have to get his mouth round his mums boob, she can express.
