Red sky at night...
...Shepherd's delight.
We all know the rhyme, but does anyone know why red sky at night is good and red sky in the morning is bad?

Red sky at night, sailors delight.
When we see a red sky at night, this means that the setting sun is sending its light through a high concentration of dust particles. This usually indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Basically good weather will follow.
Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning.
A red sunrise reflects the dust particles of a system that has just passed from the west. This indicates that a storm system may be moving to the east. If the morning sky is a deep fiery red, it means a high water content in the atmosphere. So, rain is on its way.

Most of our weather systems come from the west:
- therefore a sun setting in the west will reflect off the trailing edge of a weather system heading east (meaning bad weather has just passed, and good weather is due)
- a rising sun in the east will highlight an incoming weather system, and probable rain.
That's what I was always tought, anyway.....

You all need to come and stay here: we have "red sky at night", EVERY night It used to be slag tipping, but the slag is all used now. It's the BOS, (Basic Oxygen Steelmaking), plant now.
The town motto is "Refulget labores nostros coelum"
For the non Latin speakers: "The heavens reflect our labours".
