Got home took the spark plugs out and about 1.8 litres of muddy water came splashing out when I started her up.

Yup hydrolock....water doesn't compress very easily 
If the engine is running at the time of it happening - think of it trying to cope with 1000000000000000Bar of boost, and you get the idea of what happens
Seen it happen whilst off roading, some unfortunates snokel came detached whilst wading, the engine just locked solid and wouldn't turn over. Not sure of teh damage, as I didn't see the guy there again (probably been busy rebuilding/replacing the engine
)

Yep bloke at work drove his Peugeot 406 through a fairly deep flood, apparently the air intake is quite low on them. Sucked in water and then threw a rod through the block. Got the insurance to pay out for it.
Hmm. Iirc, it is recommended that any vehicle that's been stood in floodwater for sometime, as opposed to just driving through, should have the braking system stripped and checked.
