Default Why do flys circle the ceiling light?????

Ok the hot weather is slowly showing its self and so are those annoying flys. I saw my first one of the year today as it flew through my window. Then it did what a fly in the house always does.

Fly none stop around the ceiling light

Why oh Why oh WHY!!!!!!!!!

Stupid fu*king fly, does it have nothing better to do?????

It makes no difference wether the light is on or off. Even took a few swipes at the little sh*t and he flew into the other room, then came back to the bloody light and started doing it again!!!!

I noticed this back when i was about 10. never thought of it lately, but would love to know why. I mean in broad daylight with the light off, they still do it..... weird or what !!!

Nah - It's one method they use to navigate.

They think the light bulb is the sun, so they fly with it one one side or the other depending on which direction they want to fly.

Bit more involved than that - but can't be arsed to explain more

What!!!! Even when it's turned off???

Can't see how a light bulb (or the sun for that matter) will help direct them to the next fresh dog turd!!!!

A guy goes to the doctor. "Doctor," he says. "I need your help. I think I'm a fly."

"I can't help you, " says the doctor. "I'm just a general practitioner. You need a psychiatrist."

"I was on the way to the psychiatrist," says the guy. "But then I saw your light was on."

Dont know if its like moths, but the story I was told as a nipper was that all the animals and insects in the world were told to go see the baby Jesus, they would find the place by the Halo of light surrounding the manger, but the moths were late and missed it now they keep flying to every light still trying to find the babay Jesus.

Well its an old story anyway, perhaps the flies were late too.
But it does make it easier to spray the ffing things with fly spray!

But how can they tell it's a light when its off?

No power = No light = No point

They can see things a 1000 times faster than we can but they cant see that the bloody light is off. (did a google search = NOTHING!!!)

But yes that does make them an easy target for the fly spray.

And you bought it! Ah well, you were only a naive little kid back then I suppose.

Wonder what the fly and moth did before jebus was born?

I believe it's a coincidence to be honest.

From what I remember they actually fly at a preferred distance from the wall when they can't navigate and as the light is often in the centre of the room it appears that they are circling the light. I can't verify the truth in this but I was told it once and it seemed credible.

I also thought this at one point in the thread. it seems they are circling the room and the light happens to be in the middle.

try moving the light or put a fake one up to trick em out !

As J2S says - we have flies circling aimlessly round the middle of the room, where you'd expect a light to be, but it isn't. Coincidence.
