Default Owner servicing illegal if NL win General Election?

Motorcycle News Wednesday 27/4/2005 page 12, article titled "Spares trade under threat".
I quote, "Proposed laws making it illegal for individuals to work on their own vehicles suggest only approved garages could do repairs. Luckily, this ill- thought out notion has been shelved until AFTER the election".
Is this more NL control or EC inspired?
I F@cking hate NL.
Anyone remember I suggested, in my thread about electrical work, that this would be next?

My reference is true, look in MCN for yourself.
I don't think MCN would be wrong, they keep a close watch for such things.

No date right. MCN may have talked about this previously.

It's not a wind up or a misunderstanding.

We ran an article about this some time ago - it's been on the cards for at least two years. But it's an EU idea, not a Government one, though the decision as to whether or not it is foisted on us here as well as in Europe will rest with the Government after the election.

We've already seen the first part, with anti-tamper caps fitted to mixture adjusters on the few bikes that still have carburettors. In some parts of the EU it is an offence to fit parts to the bike (or to your car) that aren't CE approved for that particular vehicle and the CE approval process also often includes being fitted by an authorised/qualified fitter so...

In Germany you can't even fit different sized wheels and tyres to your car unless there's TuV approval for them. Try it and the vehicle will fail the MOT...

Thankyou for your confirmation Sbradley.
Now I wonder if pslewis would like to comment further?
He might soon have to go back to dealer servicing rather than getting his overalls on.

I remember a considerable push from the EU to ban pattern parts and insist that only original equipment be used on cars. This sounds like a similar line, although in both cases this would cause so many businesses to fold I can't see any UK politician having the nerve to go through with it.

The nanny state will accept that regulation with open arms. Means another way to screw extra money out of us too.
