Where would one go to complain about a stupid speed limit?
Jct 26 of the M1, I use that Jct every working Day and have done for about 4 years. Off of that Jct, there is the A610, a road known locally as "the one that goes to Ikea" It consists of approximatley 6 miles of Wide Dual carriageway, leading to Ripley. The road used to carry a national speed limit.
Over the past year, they have added rumble strips to the road. Not a bad idea I know, for idiots that don't know a roundabout is approaching, but to start the strips almost 1 mile from the roundabout is a facking joke But that's not the worst of it.
During January, they totally re barriered the central reservation. Total waste of money in my view as the existing ones were fine, maybe it was for the benefit of those same pillocks who don't know where the roundabout starts, you know, just to let them know where the middle of the dual carriage way is
Still not the worst of it.
As you leave Jct 26 island and join the A610 Dual Carriageway, the speed limit is.............................. 40mph 40mph for about 1 mile. Along that one mile, the only possible threat or potential hazzard is a layby. After that mile, when the dual carriageway gets to be as wide as a runway at JFK Airport, the speed limit is relaxed slightly................ to 50MPH WTF are they thinking? There is absolutely zero hazzards or threats on that stretch of road, nothing!!
The ONLY Possible reason for suddenly banging these crap limits up is to generate revenue. I really feel like getting the press involved and making someone accountable for these actions. The road was initially built as a by pass, to relieve congestion and speed up journeys, this morning as bemused drivers trickled to work, the road which was once free flowwing was a crawling jam. All drivers trying to work out where the cameras are going to be hidden next week.
The only people who seemed happy were the people who can't drive, teachers on the way to school, tax inspectors, grey people in general, you get the picture.
So who is accountable? Who do i go and see? I don't want to write a letter, I wanna go and look someone in the eye and say "Tell me councillor or whatever you are, What process occoured to turn this road into a speed trap"
Sick and tired of being ripped off by people who don't give a toss about driving. I bet the person responsible for the speed trap either cannot drive or had 6 goes at passing their test and still even today, would rather their partner drive anywhere further than the end of the drive. To55ers

And you cannot drive 1 mile at 40MPH?? Thats 90 seconds isn't it?
The rest is 50MPH - quite fast enough for someone who struggles with the above limit!
Complain to the department of transport ..... I am sure they will 'file' your complaint appropriately

It'll be because there have been a large number of RTA's leading up to the roundabout. People taking the bend too quick and going straight through the central reservation (the bit where there are just those red and white posts put in) so they are trying to slow people down.

I believe that the ABD rep. in Notts has been fighting against this with all his might and he might be grateful for any support you can give him. People often like to whinge but rarely like to take action. He did say that there are two bridges over the road which look like ideal places for the camera vans so I guess this is about to be another excellent revenue stream for them.

Hello
I can't help, sorry. But just an observation that it appears many national speed limit roads are getting re-assessed and the speed limit being set at 40mph or 50mph. Very irratating.
Steve.

The A610 between J26, Eastwood and Ripley in particular, used to be known as the 'Road of Death' though and they probably use the old statistics that gave it its name to justify whatever theyre doing now. The most dangerous part used to be the winding country lane 70Mph dual carriageway part towards Ripley but sweeping the single lane bit into Eastwood has seen a lot of action too. During one week I saw a crash every day either going to or returning home from work.....

Interesting that you should criticise someone for not wanting to maintain 40 mph in an unecessarily restricted area when the link above shows you were unable to maintain 40 mph in an obviously restricted roadworks area!
Theres a word for your comments!

Actually, I agree. Doing 40 along there seems soooooo sllllooooowwwwww, but that's the limit and I'm getting used to the drop in speed. Means I can spend less attention on the road and look at the lovely scenery instead
I keep looking for new scameras but haven't seen any go up yet. I can see a lot of revenue being generated on there. I suppose once people get wise to where the scameras are, they have to put new lower limits and scameras elsewhere to keep the revenue coming in.
Just means it's a pain for us law abiding drivers who want to get into the outside lane when everyone else who doesn't give a stuff is still doing 70. Been fortunate enough to not cause anyone to slam on the anchors yet, but it has been tempting

Here's a sensible answer :
Speed limits are set from central governement guidance (DfT), all Councils have to follow this guidance which gives strict characteristics that a road must have for a speed limit to be implemented, doesn't sound like this road suits a 40mph. It also has to have 85th percentile speeds (the speed at which 85% of the traffic is travelling at or below) of 10% +2 , so for a 40, you'd be looking at 85th percentile speeds of 46mph to introduce a 40mph limit.
Although all Councils will do things a little differently, these are the general requirements.
HOWEVER, two things: these can be ignored if there is a significant safety issue with speed related accidents on a piece of highway. The second is that Councillors can force through speed limits ignoring all my specialist advice
But - is this a trunk road? If so, it's the Highways Agency's problem: http://www.highways.gov.uk/
Otherwise, contact your local Council's Traffic Management Team and they'll give you advice...or tell you to contact your local Councillor if it's been forced through. That's always entertaining!

I was thinking the exact same Mikey.
The road in question is very straight and quite wide, its obsurbed that they have enforced a 40mph/50mph limit.
Im waiting for the Gatsos to go up anyday now, this is the biggest money making scam Ive seen since the 30limit laser speed cameras a mile down the road.

Mikey just put a 1 in front of the speed limit like you normally do
Being serious just beware i think there maybe a camera van being parked along there soon.

I just nipped home for lunch went along the A610 at this point - 30 yards before the M1 roundabout, the speed limit returns to de-restricted NSL and then back down to 40mph again the otherside of the roundabout. This is f'ing nuts. 60Mph on a roundabout is fine, but you can only do 40 mph on a straight dual carriage way!!
